How is it Daniel didn't hear Mr. Lundy call him ma'am?

It was at The Bridges Restaurant scene where Daniel was being both Mrs. Doubtfire and Daniel Hillard but got confused halfway through and then proceeds to sit down in his dress, mask and wig and Mr. Lundy says out loud.
"Can I help you ma'am?"
It would be one thing if Mr. Lundy mumbled, or whispered or if he had a speech impediment of some kind, but he said clearly and loudly, "Can I help you ma'am?"
I can't for the life of me figure out how Daniel didn't hear him?

Many times people don’t pay attention to what the other person is saying

Daniel was drunk and exhausted from running back and forth as Doubtfire and himself. His concentration wasn't there.

Three or four double scotches on ice will do that to someone.

Who cares, it was hilarious!

He already nearly went to him the first switch, because he knows the meeting is so important for him. The family is just a nuisance for this meeting. This and the scotch + wine do their best to make him confused and let him go to the more important meeting at the restaurant.
