Why couldn't "Mrs Doubtfire" come up with an excuse to miss the bday dinner?

She could've easily said something to get out of it! Like perhaps visiting family, etc. she gave up way to easily!

"She" tried to, but Natalie insisted she come and Daniel/Mrs. Doubtfire didn't have the heart to say no to her

I know this part always bothers me. I'm like he/she could have just called later and said an emergency came up and I can't make it, but the movie needed to move along and have an ending.
