why did they even need a nanny?

The two older kids seemed old enough to fend for themselves and their sister for a few hours til their mom came home. I know my brother and I would come home from school alone for a couple hours until my mom got home (both parents were teachers so mom got back not too long after we did). THey'd be home alone for what? Two hours? If they were responsible enough to not abandon the younger one (who I assume takes a bus home, and I believe they were), what do they need a nanny for? To get dinner started? Eh, eat a snack or something.

They needed a nanny to help with the housework. That house was a pretty good size house and Miranda just didn't have the time to keep up with it herself without some help.

Make the kids do it. Cooking full meals is one thing but three kids (well two and a half kids) could clean the house. I know we did when we were young.

And we also know that they DID when Daniel punished them for not doing homework. THEY were the ones who made it so *beep* and span' when Miranda got home.

Tell me about it. We had a maid when I was under school age, the only thing I had to clean up then was the mess in my own room, but when I started school I became the new maid doing housework everyday and I learned to cook some simple recipes. My mother was notorious for putting visitors to work as well, she had absolutely no shame and would talk badly behind the back about those who didn't do any work, even if they just had visited for some few hours. It was like nothing could ever be tidy and clean enough for her.

With that background I couldn't help to think that a maid was unnecessary when I watched it in my early teens. I just had to accept it since that was what made the story going.

Don't tell me, it's no use to me. Tell yourself if you want to but don't tell me.

There's a big difference between a nanny and a maid. Nannies look after the children. That's their job. If they negotiate light housework for their employers, that's between them. But no nanny would do housework all day and still look after the children. Maids are hired to look after the house. That's their job. They keep the place neat and tidy. If they negotiate occasional babysitting with their employers, that's between them. But no maid would look after the child all day and still do all the housework. No offense, but your mother sounds vicious. My brother and I had to do chores when we were growing up, but we weren't expected to keep the entire house clean. Our homework was our first responsibility.

Mrs Doubtfire is a housekeeper, not a nanny. I think you're confusing her for Mary Poppins.

reply

fair enough. Why did they need a housekeeper?

Because Miranda was never home to keep the house or cook the meals herself, but she's the better parent because she's away from her kids more hours of the day, making more money to keep her pigsty house running.
