Even if Miranda didn't come home early...

Just how was he going to get the mess from the party cleaned up before she got home? When he said "Mom is not going to be home for four hours." He made it sound like they had all day, but four hours is very little time to throw such an elaborate party as well as clean up the mess. It's a good bet that at least some of the animals may have went to the bathroom in the yard or house. It just seems that would be impossible.

They would not have cleaned it up because Daniel acts like a child and children don't clean up after themselves.

So what do you think that they would have done hired somebody to clean it up as fast as possible, or even had the guests do it?

I watched this for the first time in a good while and started to logically think about scenes like this and a few others and just had to stop myself; he wouldn't have had time to clean up and as another poster stated, he made it sound like all day, but having watched the movie since I was a kid, it FELT like they had all day and I still get that feeling. The scene certainly helps reinforce the notion that he is like a child at times and why his wife wanted to divorce him.

You know what you asked a very good question, that for sure I don't think anybody would have thought an answer. If you figure the kids got to the bus stop at 3 and he said mom is not going to be home for another 4 hours, that would be 7 PM. Now we don't know for sure when Miranda first of all what time she gets off work, and second how long it takes her to get home. We don't know how far the job is from their home, and your right it did sound like they had all day. But if anything I would think he would have a time limit for the party, I don't know if they had time enough to run it for 3 hours, but 2 to 2 and a half hours at the very most, but there is no way he could have run the party until 6:50 at the very most and would have only 10 minutes to clean up if Miranda gets home promptly at 7:00 P.M. At the very most Lydia and maybe Natalie could have helped clean up the party, I would think it would be a sin to have Chris help clean up his own birthday party. And it would also depend on how big or small the mess is, and how fast it gets cleaned up, it is like the saying the sooner you get something started the sooner you get it done.

That could be a factor that is in less she knew of shortcuts to take that wild get her home quicker. But in the United States you would hear the words rush hour traffic in both the morning and late afternoon until the evening, when it seems like everybody is either rushing to work or home from work on weekdays.
