Everytime they refer to Mrs Doubtfire's accent/nationality they always state she's English, for instance Stu asking what part of England she's from and Mrs Doubtfire talking on her show about her being English but she's clearly Scottish no? Are they unaware of the difference? Just curious

I made a post about this issue a while ago but it seems to have disappeared. My issue is that they refer to England as an 'island' (what?) and Mrs Doubtfire says that's where she is from despite her having a definite Scottish accent. As myself, someone from Scotland, it is clear to me that her accent is Scottish (a bad one, but Scottish all the same) and Robin Williams was quoted in one interview that I read as saying that he based it on the accent of Bill Forsyth who is a Scottish director and whom he worked with on another film.
In my last thread I had many people disagree with this and many people who said that the character of Daniel Hillard was just putting on what he would have thought was a 'British' accent (what's that exactly?)but I disagree with this. He is supposed to be a voice-over actor and as such would surely have a good idea of what various accents sounded like.
In my opinion it was just a lazy stupid mistake by the film makers and a typical 'the UK is just England' attitude that seems to dominate. The UK comprises England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, all of which have vastly different regional accents.
It annoys me every time I see the film, I've no idea how it slipped through the editing procedure - when the Kovax monkey character says at the end that England is an island and Mrs Doubtfire AGREES! So much for the 'education and entertainment of children', she's teaching them a lot of crap!

Robin Williams was quoted in one interview that I read as saying that he based it on the accent of Bill Forsyth who is a Scottish director ...That's true, but he doesn't make a big deal about it being a Scottish accent in the movie. There seem to be a number of threads on this subject saying a similar thing. People seem to forget Williams was just imitating an accent and just playing around ... deliberately. Mrs Doubtfire's accent changes quite frequently throughout the film, as I think it was supposed to, because Robin wanted the audience to remember he was just pretending.🐭 share
It sounds like a Northern English accent, but the captions/subs call it "Scottish accent".

shareYeah, I asked that myself and I'm German. I thought native English speakers would be more accustomed to different accents in their own language.
But then I thought: maybe this is some very Northern English accent I simply don't know about. It certainly wouldn't have been my first guess... Either Scottish or Irish.
