Why was this film such a Box Office Hit?

There aren't really that many funny parts or funny lines in it, save for a few. In fact this film seems more like a Drama than a Comedy. Why was it such a big hit back in 1993?

Good reviews, effective advertising, word of mouth, repeat viewings, known director, bankable actors...... you know. The usual.

Why would it being more drama than comedy give it a lower box office take? There are plenty of successful dramas.

Well a lot of people still liked the movie

Because it's a comedy that people relate to humoursly and emotionally, also humor that intelligent and requires you to think and relate too.

I watched this recently and have to agree that I didn't find it appealing. I remember that it got a huge publicity buildup when it was released. My problem with the film is that it is just Robin Williams dressed up as an old lady doing improve comedy the whole some. The other characters are wooden and uninteresting, very poorly written.
