Simple way of making this movie a lot better?

Imho, we just need to cut 1 minute from endin.

For me, if the film would finished in the slow-motion scene on the top of the building whene the plane is above Jones, who is standin with his hands up, that film would deserve even 10/10.

There would be a lot more thinkin.

did he jump?
did he turn back, look at her and than jump with a smile on his face(happy)?
maybe he didn't jump?
maybe he choose love than his dream?
was he so sick to commited a suicide?

1 minute and such a diffrence for me!
We know he didn't do it, and whatsmore there is some average "-maybe coffee? -ofcourse"

Since second time ive wathced it, i've always ended it on that moment on the roof and didnt look at the final minute. its makin it far better :)

what do u think? anyone else here that loves open-endings?

cheers :)

I just saw it for the third time or something like that.

I think it would be frustrating with an open ending.
I'm fine with how it ended.

I didn't like the ending but I agree with the person above me, that it would have been frustrating to leave it open ended. I don't know how I would have had it end though...I just felt like the conversation on the roof was out of place. It seemed too casual an ending for a film that was full of complicated emotions.

Back in the early 90's most movies were not written with openendings. People had to know the direction of characters ending. This is most likely why were know that Jones did not jump.

That, and delete the romatic subplot...

Yeah, the ending and the romantic subplot ruined the film for me. Im very fascinated by films about mental illnesses, and that is why I saw this film. But speaking as one whos being going to psychiatrists on some occations, I find the consept about romantic love between doctor and patient unnecissary and wrong. It shouldnt happen and such a situation coul, in real life, be more damaging towards the patient than anything else.

I was a bit disturbed by the ending because I found the romance to be a bit on the unrealistic side.

That Gere did an amazing job in his role is not disputed. His performance was outstanding, and reminded me SO MUCH of an old friend who was pretty much exactly the way Gere portrayed Jones.

I did not like the other doctor (Tom Irwin/Dr. Patrick Shaye) deciding that it would be best to move Jones somewhere else. That seemed to me to be wrong on quite a few levels, from trauma to the patient who has formed a base of friends among the patients at the hospital, to trauma to the other patients who care about Jones. Is it right to rip an emotionally fragile patient away from his support group? What else do you do in this case, remove the doctor (which is the law)? Is it right for a doctor to be ripped away from her patients who trust her? Difficult situation and a tough decision, but honestly it could have taken a better turn had Libbie acted in a rational manner.

What Libbie did (in falling in love with Jones) was wrong, and when she told Patrick that just screwed up everything even more. I don't know how she thought she could trust him. Was she actually expecting him to SUPPORT her? She was pretty screwed up, herself, if she thought he'd happily back her up.

So Jones wanted to fly. Libbie should have taken him parasailing! The movie could have ended that way, with Jones in gloriously wonderful (for him) mid-flight and Libbie on the ground (safe and sound) watching him, and I would have found it exhilarating.

The only time a movie should end with an open ending is if there will be a sequel. Like on Breaking Bad it showed him lying on the floor where he looked dead but was he really? And hint hint, make more of that show lol. Shame it's over.
