Unrealistic portrayal of bipolar disorder

i know its a movie and its supposed to have some fiction in it in order to engage viewers and i dont want to be one of those minorities that whenever a film is made complain of sexism, racism, homophobia, etc, movies are movies and thats that, im latino and not particularly offended when they portray us as wetbacks, beaners or loud

i thought richard gere wasnt bad at all on this playing a crazy person but as a bipolar disorder sufferer diagnosed at age 16 (im 32 now) i can say i havent done ANY of those things or anything resembling what he did while experiencing manic episodes, i mean, i have spent money recklessly, i have made a fool of myself by getting drunk and loud in public but you could say so called normal people also do those things
this makes BD patients look like headcases who cant be trusted who will stand on ledges and try to fly or worse, and being 2016 its still a misunderstood concept
Mental illness is kind of frowned upon, its hard to get and keep jobs, being in relationships because movies like this portray us as some crazy freaks and that makes us hide it, its not about feeling shame but we need to disclose it because if we experience an episode (although nothing like standing on a ledge) we need to be understood and not judged, its a medical condition like an allergic reaction, en epilectic seizure or a diabetic crisis

my point is, movies like this are the reason bipolar disorder sufferers are viewed as headcases and are forced to hide their condition in order to have a shot at a normal life, and hiding it just makes it worse because when the episodes come not only do we have to live with the emotional consecuences but relationships and jobs are lost forever, no need for special treatment just awareness, movies influence people so dont be reckless about it

in my case, i can relate much more to the Silver Linings Playbook portrayal of Bipolar Disorder, not exactly but closer
