Would they be speaking in mostly English?

I would think that amongst their own friends and family they would be speaking Spanish about 90% of the time. Correct me if I am wrong. Mexican friends that I have had spoke Spanish most of the time when they were with their families.
I guess this was just a choice that the writers made to appeal to a wider audience.

I think you're confusing Mexicans and Mexican-Americans.

BTW, this is addressed in the beginning of the film. Sad Girl was an immigrant that spoke little English until Mousie taught her the language. Sad Girl grew up with Chicanos and therefore spoke English most of the time, unlike her father who speaks the native tongue, as evidenced in the scene before she goes out to fight Mousie.
