So, what's up with Mexicans and giving themseles ghetto nicknames?

I've noticed that many Mexicans do this in real life also. What's it for? To sound "hard"? It really gets to be quite laughable. I mean come on, "Sad Girl" and "Mousie"? Do they have the brains of 5-year-olds to be comfortable going around with names like that?

cause mexicans got a great sense of humor

Uh, maybe because there is a such thing as ghetto Mexicans??? Just a thought.

Did you invoke racism into your question to try and mask the fact that you really don't know what a NICKNAME is? If so, sorry. It was obvious.

reply

hey bitch, I dare you to go to east la and ask them that

I think it's pretty obvious who the real dumbass is. (Hint: it's the poster above me)

I'm Latino, and I always thought those kind of names were above all idiotic. I remember when my sister hung out with such trash, she brought this friend of hers nicknamed "Snoopy" home. When she introduced him, I introduced myself as Woodstock. When my sister would mention his, I'd sing to her te Snoopy Come Home song.

Those names are absurd and ridiculous. To date I've never known the point of those names. Let alone how they came up with them.

reply

You've never heard of nicknames?

reply

LOL. I find it funny and ridiculous as well but I enjoy making fun of it. It's sort of a joke in my family and we've made up our own chola/cholo names to be goofy. My sister's La Loca, my brothers are Joker and Payaso and I'm La shy girl.. :P

It's entertaining.

What's the big deal about nicknames? Sorority girls give each other nicknames. Nicknames happen in every culture, every race, every socioeconomic group.

I don't understand why anyone would find it stupid. It's a profound way of taking control of how you are seen, of creating an identity for oneself. It can also reveal certain truths about the way you see yourself, or the way others see you.

Changing one's name is actually a rite of passage in certain ancient cultures. It's anything but stupid.

OMG! Where have you been? Under a rock???

All "gangs" give members nicknames.

It's like a rite of passage - to mark one's identity within the gang.

It's not a Mexican thing.

In "Westside Story" the white gang members all had names: "Ice", "A-rab", "Snowboy" to name a few.

And even contemporary members of the Eye-talian gang - the Mafia - still brandish nicknames: Joe Bananas" Bonanno, Angelo "Quack Quack" Ruggiero, and Charlie "Lucky" Luciano.

Oh - and lets not forget all those "classic" gangsters: "Bugsy" Siegel, "Legs" Diamond and "Scarface".

Honey: it's a "thug" thing - not a "Mexican" - nor even a "race" thing.

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

George W. Bush gave his entire administrations nicknames, too. And his gang did a lot more damage to the world than Sad Girl, Mousie, and the rest of the Echo Park locas could do in a thousand lifetimes.

I am embarrassed to admit that I used to hang with people with nicknames like this, but I was a teenager. Sad thing is some of these people were adults at the time, and they probably still refer to each other like that.
