Did this kill Robert Townsends career?

He was doing well for himself as a triple threat up until this film which failed miserably at the box office. Is this what diminished his career?

reply

Maybe, but then again I think he was more into working behind the camera in the first place.

A boat that floats on water can also sink in it.

I think if anything, it pretty much exposed Robert Townsend as not really being that funny to begin with (I always found Townsend to be extremely corny). If anything, much of his earlier success like w/ Hollywood Shuffle and his Partners in Crime HBO specials could be credited in large part to Townsend's partnership w/ Kenan Ivory Wayans.

It got even worse if you ask me when Townsend had that WB sitcom, The Parent 'Hood (which seemed like to be his version of The Cosby Show). Like w/ The Meteor Man, Townsend seemed extremely hung up on preaching to you and interweaving heavy-handed PSAs during the episodes and what not.

I disagree every episode wasn't like that . Sure some had lessons but what's wrong with that? Some people need lessons like that.

The Meteor Man lost tens of millions and earned terrible reviews. It didn’t exactly ruin Townsend’s career; he kept working for years afterward, and even co-created and starred in a sitcom, The Parent ’Hood, that aired for a few seasons on The WB. But The Meteor Man certainly ended his ascent. He never got a budget like that again, and he’s not a part of the studio system anymore. (One of the last things he directed was a 2014 Bill Cosby stand-up special that Netflix wisely decided to never release.)
