Mein Krieg -- why America is in Iraq

As the reviewer of this film points out, the job of researching the actual mindset of WWII German soldiers has not been finished.

In fact, this subject has not even been scratched. Peculiar viewpoints pop up all over the world about the German population, because, especially in America, no one is actually allowed to address the questions except from a viewpoint established during WWII itself.

For example, Americans have repeatedly watched film of German civilians being paraded through concentration camps, and have never asked, "Well, what exactly could old men, women and children have done to stop these institutions?"

Recently, faced with the same political processes that built the structures that ended in WWII in Germany, Americans are beginning to review the German past, perhaps too late.

Germans have been emailing Americans, literally asking them, in light of recent American history, if Americans -- knowing the German history -- were stupid, or simply crazy?

The sad truth is, nobody will face how this actually happened in Germany -- it's much easier to simply go with the same old stories.

When will americans be paraded on the streets of Baghdad and Fallujah to witness the things their soldiers did there?

Iraq was a war the US never should have fought, but it can hardly be compared to the Nazi invasion of Poland or the Soviet Union. For starters the US never had plans to eradicate the native population of Iraq or reduce it to slave labor, while colonizing the country with Americans. Germany's eastern conquests were all about finding 'living space' for the Germans, and if the native populations of those regions had to be eradicated in order to make space, so be it. The Iraq War was about regime change. Whether or not Saddam should have been removed or whether his removal was worth the price in blood and treasure is up for debate, but it was not a genocidal war of conquest like the German war effort in the East.

As for Americans being paraded through the streets of Baghdad and Fallujah...

Not likely, considering the US has achieved something of a victory in Iraq even if it isn't a pretty one. The Iraqi goverment put in place by the US is no longer in imminent danger of collapse, Saddam is gone, and the insurgency is greatly weakened and no longer relevant.

In all the discussions of Americas involvement in Iraq, one key piece of context is nearly invisible. That the UN, Americas war master, detailed certain policies and mandates is altogether neglected. Entry into Iraq was not a unilateral, arbitrary decision; the entire civilized and uncivilized world expected, indeed pressured the US to lead the way.

The ensuing politics and assumed nefarious reasons all came later, with the luxury of the fact that the war was on and the man at the top was now the effigy-in-chief. The small cogs, sundry congressmen and women, the senators, the UN hounds, all pushed this war and with it America...right off the cliff. The American engagement of force post Cold War reads like a textbook on how to mold an attack dog.

The next and only war Americans should fight is the one overdue within its domestic borders...a civil war. But this time freedom will be gained not for the few slaves but for the entire population needlessly dictated to and sacrificed for big filthy money and power that knows no borders or morality or party affiliation. We the people are the poor, baffled suspect sitting on a chair being abused by 2 cops; one says they're the good cop and the other is the bad cop. What have we done to deserve this?

The current illegal war being fought by the US and her Allies is taking place within the context of 24hr news. Remove that moral guide and you would, I'm certain, see the face of total war once again.

Who is benefiting from the restructure of Iraq and Afghanistan? You point to the fact that Germany was gifting more land, and profit, to her own people, at the expense of the native populace. Tell me, who's getting the big fat oil and infrastructure contracts down there, in the Middle East? The US may not be openly removing a population, but they sure as hell aren't supporting and nurturing the one that's already there, are they?

Between March 2003 and January 2012, the Iraq war alone has caused over 100,000 civilian deaths.

Don't kid yourself that human nature is ever any different, no matter the time, nor the place.
