Movie locations

1.
There is a Key West Strand movie theater, but it looks nothing like the one in the movie.
Here is a page revealing the identity of the building used in the movie as the movie theater:

2.
There is a scene in the movie, @ 40:10, where we see, in screen upper right, a street sign indicating the corner of Duval and Eaton. The sighs are in the style of the street signs of Key West, and there is an actual intersection of a Duval Street and an Eaton Street in Key West, FL.
That's because the location is Cocoa village, FL. The street sign is fake; it's just for authenticity. The true location is Brevard Ave. and Harrison St.

3.
Just a little way down the street, the Bailey's and Pear Tree sign, visible in upper left @ 41:03, was still there, when last photographed for Google Earth Street View on 05/2011. The red white and blue awning, which was a barber shop, was also still there. Those two features appear to still exist in the 2/13/2014 satellite view, but I can't be sure. The theater exterior is on the same block, on Brevard Ave.

4.
The scene at the end, when he says goodbye to Gene and Sandra and then drives away is apparently in Key Wast itself. The sign says "Key Wester Motel", which is semi famous as a place where the Beatles stayed. It has been torn down since (1999) and was replaced by the Hyatt Windward Pointe in 2002. That location gives the view seen in the movie.
Present address: 3675 South Roosevelt Boulevard, Key West, FL.
Pic of motel from way back then: http://keywesttheblog.blogspot.com/2012/06/its-no-great-secret-that-iv e-been-known.html

5.
The segment at the very end where Gene and Sandra run down to water's edge seems to be just a little way down, closer to the Key Ambassador Resort Inn location.

It seems fitting that they ended the movie actually in Key West. Also the farewell military salute to the young couple was also a nice touch.
