Anybody else addicted to this movie?

I love this movie.

I first saw it in the theater back in early '93 and then had it on video tape and watched it over and over again. It just really tapped my imagination in a wonderful way.

Twelve years later, I still put in the DVD quite often and enjoy watching it.

Anyone else feel this way about Matinee?

You are not alone Chris. What a wonderful film.

It is a superb film with a great cast that includes an excellent group of character actors such as Dick Miller,Jesse White,William Schallert,Robert Cornthwaite,Kevin McCarthy and John Sayles.
This is a film that really appreciates history and classic cinema.

jojomc23: I'm pretty sure the film you're talking about is Beethoven's 2nd. The clip is played at the drive-in theater where Beethoven and his girlfriend are watching the movie...

reply

Thanx 4 replying.Some1 else told me Matinee was on Beethovens 2nd a while ago.Now you have defo confirmed it.Its a great movie Matinee are you a fan of it?

reply

I have loved this movie since i was a little kid i bought it at video store's going out of business sale for a buck like 10 years ago. I never knew it had such a following until I got on here & looked it up. Too bad alot of the young actors havent done much else.

I'm not sure how I discovered this movie but I had it on VHS and was happy to find a DVD. I've watched it about 20 times - most recently about an hour ago. I see where Luke Halpin is shown in the closing credits both as crew and "man in the crowd." Surely this is not the same teen actor that was in the TV series "Flipper?" I'll have to go back now and see if I can spot him.

reply

[deleted]

Yes, it is the same Luke that played "Sandy Ricks" in Flipper. I was fortunate enough to get the DVD years ago and still watch it occasionally.
I tried to spot Luke in the crowd scene but couldn't. I hope he hasn't aged like Jan Michael Vincent.

Universal used that clip in Beethoven 2 when the two dogs
see it playing on a drive in movie screen.

It's easy to fall in love with "Matinee." What a great pleasure to watch this movie from start to finish.
No doubt people will pick at inaccuracies in the portrait of William Castle, but who cares? This is not a biopic.
It's simply Joe Dante's best work, along with "The `burbs" and, don't forget, one the most underrated films of the 1990s.
BTW, the soundtrack is also excellent!

So glad there is such strong support for this wonderful little movie. Such a shame really that the first time i heard of it was on Sky Movies 6 on at a time where nobody will watch it, it deserves so much better. And like all good movies it has a Band of Brothers connection. Now for the long search for the DVD.....

reply

Who wouldn't love a movie that parodies (in a completely friendly way) William Castle and Bert Gordon at the same time?

This is my favorite movie with John Goodman. I haven't seen it in years but I remember how much I loved it. It does a wonderful job of recreating that whole era. Does anyone else actually remember going to see matinees? Unfortunately, I don't own this film, so I keep watching for them to show it on TV, but I either keep missing it, or they're not showing it.

reply

I just watched it on HBO. I am a HUGE movie buff and have seen just about everything and can't believe I've never seen or heard of this movie before tonight. I can be pretty critical when reviewing movies but can't find a single thing not to like about this one. Not only does it seem to do a good job of representing that time but it was absolutely hilarious. Some of Goodmans best work for sure...

This is a very charming movie. Just from the watching the trailer on the internet, I knew I had to see this movie.

The only way I could see it was to buy a rare used copy on Amazon for almost $40.00. I watched it a number of times and after a few weeks, I sold it on Amazon for a little less than what I paid for it.

I like the scenes of downtown Key West, FL. The characters and the story was charming. Having the Cuban Missile Crisis as backdrop to the story made it very interesting.

I thought it was worth seeing. I don't know how this movie passed under my radar back in the early 90s.

This film originally got a "Two Thumbs Up" from Siskel and Ebert, and certainly a "Thumbs Up" from myself, but it was a box office flop in the theaters, back in 1993. Maybe that is why it is not currently released on DVD and has not been released often, in the past.

I dig it...especially some of the dialogue:

'Almost nobody's what they seem to be...and the ones that are--you REALLY gotta watch out for...'

'This door won't open for 2,000 years!'
'Who told you that?'
'The guy who sold it to me!'
'Boy, am I in the wrong business...'

'All great stars have that certain...something. Whether they're moving scenery, or whatever...'

and the look on Cathy Moriarty's face when John Goodman is looking at the baby alligator and going ''Alli-mander'...'Man-odile'...'GAL-IGATOR!'
She can see her future...and she doesn't like it one bit

'Oh, Bill--why can't you let the man in you come out and put the insect aside?'
'Insecticide! Where?!'

Jesse White as the mogul--terrific...
'What's that?'
'War news'
'Why--you gotta bet on it?'

the lead's description of those lame live-action 60s/70s Disney films:
'it's another one of those flying rubber-professor movies...'

Goodman's rap about the cave painting is great, too

'We all dream of being a child again - even the worst of us. Perhaps the worst most of all...'

reply

This is one of my favorite movies. I really wish I could suck it up and pay the high price for the used DVD but I just can't. "Freaked" eventually came on DVD, and so I hope this one will too.

Saw it first years ago. Saw a documentary about B-flicks. OMG there is Mr. Castle. I had no idea. Saw it again last night. Great Movie for the kids.

I love this movie too... I watch it every time they show it on Bravo.

If you're not shocked, you're not paying attention.

Truely an underappreciated gem.

Who says violence is not the answer?

reply

I'm watching it right not for the "umpteenth" time. The only drawback is that I didn't know any Sixties kid audience that misbehaved like that in a theater! Is that a regional thing? It certainly didn't happen around here! We valued going to every movie, and no one ever acted like those children! Even into teen years in the Sixties, we were a well-behaved bunch. I don't recall any popcorn or candy throwing. Are you kdding?! That was a major treat! Why would you waste it?!

Some of it did echo the feeling of the time though I wouldn't expect the boy to be so blase about meeting a man he likely had been reading and hearing about. He was enough of a fan to have magazines and other future collectibles, so why was he *shrug* about meeting actors and others connected to these films? I know people in my age group who were fortunate enough to meet William Castle, Bert I. Gordon, Dick Miller, and Roger Corman. They treasure memories of speaking to them and whatever souvenirs they walked away with. That didn't ring true: the boy's nonchalance.

One of my all-time favorite quotations made it into "Mant": "You can't drop an atomic bomb on Chicago!" The original is delivered by Peter Graves in "Beginning of the End", the giant grasshopper movie that I especially love because I'm an Illinoisan!

I also liked this exchange between the brothers:
"He said 'hell'!"
"That's OK. It's a crisis."

I can't believe I never even HEARD of this gem until I came accross it by accident! I had fallen asleep in front of the tv and this was on Encore. Using my cable co.'s Tivo-like function I was thus able to snag the whole recording. What a JOY! I lived thru the Missle Crisis and the air raid drills in the hallway ( They were VERY strict about you TALKING during a nuclear holocaust!) AND saw "Them" at a matinee. If you can believe it, the saturday matinee cost just 25 cents and a soda was a dime and candy was a nickle. So for 50 cents I was in kid heaven! I consider myself a film buff and know all about Wm. Castle, Corman, Dick Miller ( He was also a scream in Terminator- "Just what you SEE, pal."). So how come this NEVER even appeared on my radar???? What a treasure!

I just posted something similar about how I couldn't believe I'd never heard of it. I've been real sick lately and my sleep cycle is all screwed up so I've been awake most nights. I was looking through the on screen TV guide at the 2,000,000 HBO channels for tonight trying to see if there was something on that could entertain me for a couple of hours and saw something called Matinee with John Goodman. I set my DVR to record it, took a little nap, and when I woke up in the middle of the night knowing I wouldn't get back to sleep for many, many hours I figured I would give it a shot. I can't believe how much I loved it and that I had never heard of it before. I kept in on the DVR and can't wait to watch it with my two young daughters when they wake up in a few hours. What a terrific film...

reply

Yes, I lived through the Missile Crisis too. Where were you in '62? Well, I graduated from high school.

I loved this movie. I'd never heard of it. I just stumbled upon in on TV. Caught it from the beginning.

It was hilarious with so many good lines that others here have posted.

The movie is also poignant for folks old enough to have lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis. I remember my girl friend Linda being so upset she started crying. I comforted her reassuring her that everything was going to be alright. I was too young to realize that sometimes everything doesn't turn out alright.

If you do some serious reading about the Cuban Missile Crisis, you know the World almost went over the edge.

I'm agnostic. But if you ever needed evidence in a discussion about the existence God, you might site the World's leaders muddling through this crisis without having a nuclear holocaust as evidence of a benevolent Supreme Being who intervened.

In the last couple of years, Matinee was re-released on DVD and is now widely available for cheap, weather you are buying it new or used. You can also rent it through Netflix and Blockbuster. You can even rent it over the internet with Amazon Instant Video.

I saw it on HBO last night. Brought back strong memories. I forgot about the anarchy of popcorn double features.
