Is MANT available?

I really liked Matinee, but what I really want to see is MANT (the movie within the movie) in more than the short segments. I know it wasn't a real movie, of course, but I suspect there was enough footage to put together a mini movie. On the DVD perhaps? Anyone know?

Well...

The widescreen version laserdisc of "Matinee" released in '93 (which is long gone out of print and very rare), has a supplement of the "Mant" movie, even showing footage that wasn't shown in the movie, it runs about 20 minutes....hysterical stuff.

"Matinee" wasn't a huge success at the movies or on home video, so there wasn't that many laserdiscs made. The pan & scan lasers are very easy to find (they were cheaper)...but you must get the WIDESCREEN version for that's the one with "Mant". And of course, you need a laserdisc player, too....that or find someone that has an LD player and have him burn you the "Mant" supplement on DVD.

And yes, I have this treasure!

I HAVE to get that one! all the clips in the movie seemed cool. Just thinking about the title "Mant" makes me laugh hysterically.

Thanks a lot for the information! At least it exists, although finding it doesn't look easy. Good news/bad news, I guess.

Thanks again.

I'm so glad I got this movie when I did about 5-6 yrs ago. It's on VHS. I bet it's out of print now. I wanted to upgrade my VHS tapes and record them to DVD but they have a copyright protect and so it wouldn't work with my recorder.

Could you put it up on YouTube for the world to see and enjoy?

The "Mant" featurette is pretty much just a patch of the movie seen within "Matinee". It ends when the dentist shows his claw. Too bad, as the colorful ending in the theatre was lovely.

Even when I saw this in the theater, I would have paid to see MANT. Big-time Mystery Science Theater bait!

MANT! is now on a French (zone B) BLU-RAY...As one of the extras on 'Panic Sur Florida Beach' Un Film De Joe Dante.
The film is in English with removable French Subtitles.

Which: Matinee or Mant?

that is ULTRA cool the Mant movie was a supplement on the laserdisc! Would LOVE to see the feature on its own. It stars all the typical "Joe Dante" castmembers.

I just purchased a copy of the "Matinee" DVD from an obscure mail-order company at eCrater.com. It turned out to be a burned (not pressed) disk, with an ink-jet reproduction of the original cover art. Image -- not Universal -- is given as the publisher of the disk.

The transfer is excellent, but, unfortunately, the "Mant!" (note the exclamantion point) scenes are not collected in their own section. Fortunately, I have the rare widescreen LV, which has this on the third side. Perhaps someone should post this on YouTube.

This film deserves a Blu-ray edition, if only for the excuse of such a supplement. It is the best send-up of a '50s sci-fi/horror flick ever made, and deserves to be preserved.

I want to add that these links still work but you might need a proxy. I use Hola Better Internet and switched it to UK and now I can watch them. Just a pointer for anyone interested.

I watched Matinee and Mant! tonight--disappointed it was just a little more than what the movie showed. It was such an entertaining spot on pastiche of an early 60s sci-fi film. William Schallert especially. Wish there was more (though maybe it would have worn out its welcome--worth the risk I think).

Even the "Uncle shopping cart" movie did a great job capturing the feel of those light comedies of the period.

I liked Matinee--it was innocuous and witty, but they could have ditched the kids and Cuban subplot and told a story of low budget filmmakers similar to Ed Wood that would have been much more enduring IMO.
The kids were good, but it really picked up life whenever it got back to Woolsey and Mant!

MANT is now available on the Arrow Films Blu-ray release of the film. However, it's a British disc, so you'll need a multi-format deck if you're in the states.
