It all takes place in Berkeley (mostly), Oakland (the dealership) and SF (the sperm bank is in SF). All the location shots were filmed in these places. Studio shots may have been done in Burbank, but I don't know.

The San Francisco Bay Area mostly in Oakland and Berkeley. Hals Dealership was on the Corner of Madison st and 14th st right across the street from the Main Oakland public library in Downtown Oakland. also Lake Merritt in Oakland appears a few times in the movie mainly the part where Hal and the Elephant takes a dive in the Lake also the part where Zora and Teacake are driving the Moped around the Lake. if i'm not mistaken Oakland Technical high school on Broadway in North Oakland is also shown. many shots of Berkeley like on Telegraph at the begining of the movie and i think Whoopi store was on College ave. hope that helps.
