Her use of filters

In the documentary, Leni talks about her use of filters in cinematography. Many of the clips from her early films are obviously in black and white. But, there is a bluish tint to many of them shown here, as well as the expected sepia.

Were the filters she was talking about for her color photography, or in some way for B/W?

I think some of the B&W shot were done with an orange or red filter because of the very high contrast.

Filters of various colors are frequently used in B&W photography, their colors depending on what kind of light one wants to filter out. In concept, it's similar to the use of polarizing filters to remove glare.

Also films usually were colored during revelation process of the film. It has nothing to do with the filters which were used to control the contrast or brightness of the images.
