Great movie!

I love this film, very funny and touching. To bad it totally flopped at the box office. I do tell people to rent it from time to time, and those who do always come back to me and say "what a great movie, you were right!". Very underrated movie this one. Check it out if you have the chance!

Agree totally. Very well done, I like the three Niel Simon films I have...Lost in Yonkers, Biloxi Blues and Breighton Beach Memoirs. I think Biloxi Blues is my favorite, but Lost in Yonkers is close.

my god its full of stars

This movie was on one of the HBO channels this morning, so I watched. I never get tired of this movie!! :) Richard Dreyfus was hilarious as Uncle Louie, and Mercedes Ruehl as Aunt Bella was a sweet heart! I loved this movie because it goes to show how truly screwed-up a lot of families can be.

I just watched this movie for the first time and enjoyed it a lot, but have a question. Beware, there's spoilers.

Was there a definite reason why Bella left home at the end? Was it because she was tired of how her mother treated her, because I thought the mom was finally coming around?

Another question is, why did the mother begin to cry after her daughter left the room, telling her that her usher boyfriend didn't want to marry her?

Sirwilliam12003:
She stated all the reasons she no longer needed to be stuck in that lonely place, waiting on a cantankerous, unappreciative old woman. She did mature when she received encouragement and support from her other relatives, and especially when saw them stand up for their rights.

Mean "ole * Ma" grew from all that as well -- she was greatly relieved to learn that she wasn't the only person strong enough to stand up for their rights. She cried because she was finally given permission to --by realizing that those she had thought were so badly needing coddling and protection no longer need so much ... thus allowing her to finally feel and show a little compassion -- something no one had ever done for her, apparently.

"Mean Ole * Ma" BTW had a great line no one lifted up yet:
...."You try cutting off my braids, you get your fingers chopped off!!"

I would have loved to have seen Kevin Spacey reprise his Tony-award winning performance as Uncle Louie - Spacey has "moxie".

The movie is okay, but the play is SO much better.

I've played Jay in three different productions and each experience was wonderful! If you ever get a chance to see a live theatrical production of "Lost in Yonkers" --- GO!
