I think what people forget about this movie is that the telling of the life of the Buddha/Prince Siddhartha, is from a child's book. It is written so a child understands. Keanu was not told he was to talk in an accent until he got to Nepal and they were going to start filming. Also, there are writings that describes what Prince Siddhartha looked like prior to his becoming the Buddha and they really nailed the look itself with Reeves. The whole story of Siddhartha is suppose to have an ethereal, dream like quality.
To those who refer to the book Siddhartha, please note the book is not about the Buddha, but rather about an Indian named Siddhartha also and who comes into contact with the Buddha's teachings while the Buddha is still alive and teaching.
Buddhists don't all take the stories of the Buddha's conception, birth, life, etc. as gospel truth. A lot is symbolic.
As an intro to Buddhism 101 for people who know little if anything about the Buddha or Buddhism. This is a wonderful film. Also, Keanu Reeves truly tried to live the life of a monk while filming. He wore the monastic robes. He also fasted for weeks to do the scene where he is so skinny he is close to death. reeves started going into kidney failure for real. The part where he's in the river and is talking to the water buffalo was all improvised and the waters were full of alligators. During many of the Enlightenment scenes, while they filmed Reeves was terribly sick with food poisoning....terrible cramps and diarrhea, yet he still managed to look healthy and serene.
As a Buddhist I recommend it to newer Buddhists and those wanting to know more about Buddhism.
The Buddha was Indian although his birthplace is now in Nepal instead of India.
Be well and happy,
