I just thought that Evan was Dean's boss or something, and they were best friends. But now that you mention it...

I don't understand what you are implying. I tried to figure out what Evan was in relation to everyone else, but just assumed he was Dean's boss.

I guess studying for college finals and a 5 days of insomnia is starting to hit me hard.

I was trying to imply that it felt like Dean seemed to be way too affectionate about Ewan. Maybe it's just me, but I saw quite a lot of hints to it.

I did feel there was something more, almost like Dean and Ewan were brothers. Seems like there was more to that subplot, and decided to leave it out all together rather then complicating the movie any further.

I think the two were business and working partners and very close friends.

The version released in the US is shorter than the one released elsewhere. A lot is clearer in the longer version (it's about 15 minutes longer).

there was nothing homosexual hinted at - all we know is that the father was an architect and designed a building for Evan - obviously they were close - like brothers - if not brothers - but the wife wasn't disturbed at her husband's reaction

more than likely - that closeness was a clumsy device needed to bring the father to a crisis point - where he'll welcome a trip to Bhutan - and thereby come to terms with Evan's death - with the death of Lama Norbu - and with the comforting concept of reincarnation

It was his best friend. Men are allowed to have friend without being gay.
