Where are they now

The only big star to come out of Lipstick on your collar was Ewan McGregor. What ever happened with Giles Thomas and Louise Germaine? They had their moments in the course of the series, but I can't seem to find that they did much of anything afterward.

Does anyone know what became of Giles and Louise?

reply

I believe Dennis Potter wanted to use Louise Germaine again but her career may have been handicapped by having a child. If you have a copy of this series do let me know as I would like to get hold of it and am finding it very hard to get.

I have extras of the first two tapes (the first 4 or 6 episodes), if you want them. I have them listed on Half.com

For some reason, Giles Thomas makes me extremely curious. Probably because, even though he was actually billed before Ewan McGregor, Ewan's career took off, and Giles's didn't. I wonder if it had anything to do with how badly he was chewing the scenery in some of "Lipstick."

Think ur being a bit harsh here. This was a fab show and it takes some balls to put a character like this on film. We're used to actors 'modelling' their lines and characters but Thomas gave it an awesome effort, very funny. Too many actors nowadays have their heads up their own bums while they do their job - on and off camera. They're more worried about looking good than putting in a decent performance. I hate mutterers! After all, it is a comedy drama.

I haven't heard much of him either. Shame. Shall we try and track him down?

Wow! I really miss this series I have a few episodes when it originally aired on CBC in the early 90's. This is a Masterpiece and should have won an Academy award... Sheer Brilliance.

Cheers, Olly! In the meantime, there's plenty of other Potter material available on DVD. Not enough, it's true, but it's a start.

I think that Giles Thomas' performance as stuttering Francis who was bit awkward around ladies was brilliant. He had a small role in Human traffic. I would also like to know more about him.
I saw Louise Germaine in an episode of sunburn (it was tv series about holiday reps, not very good one but I have to confess I occasionally watched it..)

He did - in Midnight Movie (1993). Potter also 're-used' Gina 'Blackeyes' Bellman in Secret Friends (1992). I have the BBC Video edition of the former and the MIA Video edition of the latter. Believe me, on both counts, you're not missing much - they're among Potter's poorest works.

Louise Germain was quite a prolific soft porn star before she landed this role. In searching for updated news on her myself I was directed to some very naughty sites (containing even naughtier pictures of her!!!)

Wow, got any links? ;)

I'm lucky enough to have both the series on VHS and the original soundtrack on cd. It was a wonderful drama, and the last near-great one from the pen of the mighty Dennis Potter. One thing it captures so well is that moment when the British ruling class had to face up to the fact that the loss of the Suez Canal meant, on the one hand, the decline of the British Empire and, on the other, the ascendancy of Pax-Americana. And yet, the stirrings of post-war optimism are also captured in the character of Mick Hopper. The casting is superb - Giles Thomas, Louise Germaine, Ewan McGregor, Douglas Henshall, Peter Jeffrey and Maggie Steed are all brilliant. Lipstick is far from being Potter's best work, but then he set a high benchmark with Pennies From Heaven and The Singing Detective (the best television drama ever made, bar none). It is, nonetheless, essential viewing, and alongside Blackeyes, should've been made available on DVD long ago. If I get round to burning my copy onto DVD I'd be happy to send copies out to anyone who wants one. But it'll be a while before I can do that.

It is available on DVD but almost impossible to get hold of. The last DVD copy I saw on ebay went for a small fortune and as I already have it on VHS I could justify buying it.

Podwilliams is absolutely right. If you liked this then you'll be blown away by Dennis Potter's other work, it really is worth finding and getting hold of some. Particularly The Singing Detective which becomes all the more poignant (if this were possible) when you consider the tragic way Potter died.

RE: Louise Germaine. When dabbling in soft porn she often went by the name Tina Germaine, I'm not sure if that is actually her real name and anyway, she's married since making Lipstick so she could well go by a completely different name now.

My comment - as always? AAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!

Has anyone tried writing to Sarah Potter at Whistling Gypsy Productions (copyright owners) and seen if a rerelease could be arranged? Or an official DVD release?

reply

It's just been screened on "YESterday" cable TV station (in the UK).

If you want to know "where they are now" by the way, checking out their entries here on IMDB is generally a good way to start. Louise Germaine hasn't worked (on screen) since the turn of the century by the look of it. Giles Thomas just had a role in "Skins". Dougie Henshall continues to work in films and TV.

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.

Yes, I also enjoyed the recent re-run on the Yesterday channel, although episode 5 seemed to have lost a full scene from the beginning running approximately three and a half minutes. The following scene of Mick and Lisa at the theatre was also trimmed by around two minutes. I've no idea why they did this. Fantastic series though, and good to see again 17 years after its original airing.

It was a TV miniseries, genius, so it wouldn't have won an Academy award.

olly3663, just to correct you. Louise Germaine also went by the name Tina Reid (which is actually her real name)

@podwilliams - absolutely spot on. This is a brilliant series. Superb acting all round (even from porn star Germaine). Really surprised that Giles Thomas didn't go on to great things (he had a bit part in Human Traffic). His performance in this was outstanding. 100% committed and very vivid characterisation. I can only assume that he voluntarily left acting as he surely would have achieved much more.
