Are we to believe that the boy (Iron Head) dies at the end, beaten to death by the Red Guard? Or, because he has been the film's narrator, are we to believe that the character survives? Or does asking this question miss the point? Thanks.
shareI think it's a valid question. Most movies have adult narrators looking back at their childhood. Being narrated by a kid leads one to believe he never made it to adulthood.
The people you idolize wouldn't like you.
He must have survived, because he said that his mother later went into a labor camp. If he had not died there that day, how would he know what would happen to his mother in the future?
Also notice the voice. The voice is the same as the boy at the end of the movie, around 10-11 years old. SO, he is narrating the story not too long after the beating.

says, "I can make another one for you."
At the end, he looks up and sees the blue kite caught in a tree.
So now it's time to make another one.
