From what was he graduating? He didn't seem old enough to be graduating high school, he seemed more like 13 or so. Was that the age when kids graduated back then?

He was graduating from the eighth grade (it says the grade on his report card). Then and now it is very common in St. Louis for kids to attend K-8 at the same school, then 9-12 at high school.
