Never understood the Grant and Malcolm dialogue about being scared

Dr. Ian Malcolm: The kids OK?
Dr. Alan Grant: I didn't ask. Why wouldn't they be?
Dr. Ian Malcolm: Kids get scared.
Dr. Alan Grant: What's to be scared about? It's just a little hiccup in the power...
Dr. Ian Malcolm: I didn't say I was scared.
Dr. Alan Grant: I didn't say you were scared.
Dr. Ian Malcolm: I know.

Was Jeff Goldblum on drugs?

reply

Malcolm was quite clearly flustered, if not scared, and tried (comically, I might add) to conceal this from Grant.

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing .

Yeah Malcolm was scared and was trying to act like only the kids were. When Grant asked what there was to be scared about, he got defensive because he didn't want to admit it. It's supposed to be funny...

I agree. He was scared and trying to act like he wasn't. But because he was scared he was thinking clearly and was just saying what hit his mind first.

It's possible that Malcolm may just have a general fear of the dark but another theory...

When Grant is at the front car talking to Gennaro and the kids. It's possible that Malcolm may have heard a slight rumble from the T-Rex approaching. Grant probably wouldn't have been able to hear it because he's standing out in the heavy rain but Malcolm, being by himself in the car and sitting in silence would have easily been able to hear the ominous rumbling footsteps of the Rex. It would easily explain the slightly spooked look on his face when Grant returns to Malcolm's car.

reply

I think Malcom would have said something if he heard the T-rex before hand.

reply

He would have had to yell quite loudly for Grant to hear him, and yelling loudly in that situation wouldn't have been a real safe thing to do.

reply

I never looked too deeply into it. I just thought it was hilarious. I loved the chemistry between Grant and Malcolm, and it'd be awesome to see them back at it in a future sequel, although they've sort of come together in regards to the dinosaurs now.
