Why throw away the ring?

The scene when Ray was trying to buy his way out of trouble by offering an expensive ring to Fallon, but they threw him off the roof anyway. If it were expensive wouldn't they have keep it instead of throwing it towards Ray's dead body when they reached the ground floor? Or did they realise Ray was trying to give away a cheap ring?

i took it as them knowing the ring isnt really worth much. at least not as much as they would want. seemed like even $200,000 was like change to them. the ring may have tipped them off that this guy didn't have any means of raising that kind of money. think the watch he gave to the guy in the train was worth more than the ring.

reply

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Sure their main concern was no witnesses, but if the ring was worth alot than surely they would of kept it.

Old thread, but it was all about respect. They felt disrespected by Piven character for trying to buy them off.... Gangs are ALL about respect...

I took it as Everlast just wasn't impressed with the ring. If you notice he was wearing that big shamrock ring which was pretty badass.

The way I interpreted it is that it was actually a cheap ring and Ray was trying to con them into believing it was valuable, the same way he wanted them to think that he could raise the money to bail his friends out from the predicament they were all in. I believe Denis Leary's character and his men never believed him for a second and were toying with him for a few minutes.

Interesting thoughts here. I assumed the ring was valuable because after Ray gave those train-car bums his watch, he took his ring off to hide it. Maybe it has more sentimental value to Ray.
I had always thought it was about respect too.

Listen! Do you smell something?

reply

LOL! I was wondering the same thing, according to Ray it worth $15000!

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

reply

I think it was to symbolize how little finances actually meant to them and when they are out to kill you they are out to kill you no matter what and there is no bargaining

reply

This.

The ring meant nothing to him regardless of the claimed value. They may have even taken it as an insult that it was offered instead of cash.
