This film was just pure GREATNESS!

This film would probably be in my top 5 movies of all time. I actually have a top 100! The scenery was breathtaking, the acting incredible and story just so damn heartwarming. I saw this in the theater several times and rented it so much the video guy finally told me to keep it. It was one of the first films I owned, I now have over 800. Suffice to say I love this movie and dont see where people thought it was boring. Well to each his own, I would love to hear more comments though. My only problem with the film was Jennifer. As pretty as Elizabeth Perkins, is Julie Warner is way prettier than her, I found that piece a bit distracting. Of coure Kimberly Williams is one of the the most beatiful women on the planet in my opionion. But the whole cast was attractive. Kevin Pollak one of my favorite actors did some stand up in my town a few years ago and reffered the film in his act. LONG LIVE UNCLE LOU!!!

I love the pot smoking scene in the kitchen. We did that when I was young and the folks were out of town. We would party and just talk all sorts of goofy stuff. I love this movie too and have seen it many times. I really hope someone comes up with a book title for us to read the story.

I agree about wanting a book title for this story...

I connect to each and every scene with portions of my life and each viewing just makes me see it more. That kitchen scene definately brings back some great talks...

Also from East Lansing, btw!

It's based on Mike Binder's memories of his times at the real Camp Tamakwa:

I checked amazon.com. There is no book. Unfortunately.

But there is a website http://tamakwa.com/

I also dont think Mike Binder gets enough credit for the scene designs (lighting, color, environment...he really makes it sing

Alan Arkin played the Uncle Lou role perfectly. Couldn't have been cast better. This isn't a movie that a lot of people have seen, which is a shame. I really enjoy it -- each time I re-watch!

I just finished watching it again and I'd forgotten how wonderful it is. I never went to camp, but all my friends that did comment on the reality of this film. Love it!

I think Elizabeth Perkins is much prettier than Jennifer Warner. I've never even seen Jennifer Warner in anything else. She has a completely plain face...I see women in the grocery store ten times prettier than her. But much more to the point, I had never seen her before or since this film. I'm going to look her up now here, because I just think that she has such a completely nondescript face, coupled with a rather lackluster performance here, that it's no wonder her career went nowhere.

Julie Warner was in quite a few things, while she was never as popular as Elizabeth Perkins. I disagree with your view on her looks, but it is only my opinion. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As long as you liked the movie though!!!

I agree with everyone here. This movie is just a lot of fun. Alan Arkin is cast perfectly as Uncle Lou and the rest of the cast is just great. Bill Paxton is cool and gives a very layered performance. Not always good, not always bad, a real person and I suppose you can thank Mike Binder, who in my opinion is very under appreciated, for this, being the writer and director of the film. I really fell for Elizabeth Perkins in this movie, and my vote is she is much prettier than Julie Warner. Kevin Pollack was amazing, especially with his "shrek" dance, he made me laugh so hard. Curly Howard would have been proud. Diane Lane was, as usual, captivating and lovely and there wasn't a bad performance in the film. Even Sam Raimi got into the act. A very good film and I agree with the poster who said not enough people have seen this movie because it's a real treat! LONG LIVE UNCLE LOU!!!!!!!

There have been many times I've just put the film on to watch then end, from them cresting the rise with their duffel bags to the waving goodbye on the boat and shore, to this day, it still gets to me...

I just saw this movie, and by about 20 minutes in it had earned itself a place among my favorites ever! Oh, lawd. Camp Tamakwa looks like the most gorgeous place, situated in such a heavenly part of the world, and a total blast of an experience. It makes me wish dearly that my parents had sent me to summer camp when I was little...but nevertheless, it's the kind of film that brings back wonderful childhood memories of similar experiences. Seriously, what a magnificent place and a beautiful movie all-around. Made me feel all...amazing, and truly moved. The entire cast gave terrific performances, especially Alan Arkin, Elizabeth Perkins, Kevin Pollak, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Bill Paxton, & Diane Lane. (Oh yeah, and Sam Raimi's role was delightful as well.)

I love this movie. I think it's my favorite performance of Alan Arkin. I especially like when a character talked about how tiny everything looks. I had the same experience going back to my summer camp! I remembered that the main building was far away from the lake. But, as an adult, I saw it was right next to the lake!!
