Documentarys of this time period?

Hello, Englishman here raised in Canada. Never really taught about the England occupying Ireland thing in school over here, this is the first film I have seen showcasing it. Would like to become educated on the subject, can anyone recommend any literature or documentaries please?

Absolutely love this film, and absolutely shocked that my countrymen acted like this. I no longer want to be ignorant on the history of this conflict. DD Lewis's performance in this was top notch, his scenes with Pete Postlethwaite where unlike anything i have ever seen.

thanks, and listen to Paul McCartneys song Give ireland back to the irish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaO4XeHhwo8

why would you believe this biased little movie ?

with an admission of ignorance of the facts, you would do well to read about the true events ie both sides, before you start judging your fellow countrymen. May I remind you , those fellow countryment fought and defeated a 30 year terrorist campaign. You should be proud of that fact.

Oh shut it. England has been known throughout history for going to war because they felt that it was 'their' land to control, which is exactly why the Revolutionary war happened as well, to be free of England's crown and to rule as their own country. Ireland wanted the same thing, England just couldn't accept it. Still can't apparently.

Back off, man. I'm a scientist!

Probably a bit late on replying lol but if your talking about the looooong history of it I suppose you could watch 'Michael Collins'? Or if your just talking about the troubles, you could watch 'Bloody Sunday'? Not really sure of any other films to suggest, but I'm sure theres loads of info on google about the English in Ireland.

A very good documentary that fills in the gaps left by In the Name of the Father is the 2005 TV movie The Year London Blew Up (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0441045/), originally produced by Channel 4. It tells the story of the IRA bombing campaign in and around London, including the 1974 Guildford pub bombings which Gerry Conlon and Paul Hill were accused of. Here's a description:

In 1974-75 the capital endured 12 months of the most sustained bombing since the Blitz from the most ruthless underground cell the Provisional IRA had ever assembled.

Fifty explosions rocked the capital at a rate of one per week, leaving 35 people dead and scores more maimed for life. They assassinated the TV personality Ross McWhirter after he announced a £50,000 bounty for their capture. They bombed the flat of former Prime Minister Ted Heath. They bombed Selfridge's and Harrods. They killed innocent bystanders like Professor Gordon Hamilton-Fairley, the country's leading cancer specialist. They even set off bombs in pillar boxes, patenting the 'come-on' booby trap to target bomb disposal officers. They were also responsible for the pub bombings for which the Guildford Four were wrongly and notoriously convicted

Based on unique accounts from the IRA bombers, THE YEAR LONDON BLEW UP is a major two-hour drama-documentary made by Blast! Films for Channel 4. Sir Peter Imbert, the chief police negotiator with the IRA, gives his first interview about how the police trapped the gang and how he talked them out of Balcombe Street at the hair-raising climax.
