Excellent and hilarious

hahaha this movie makes the Chinese seem so crazy! Even that one line pointed it out, "you're witnessing the results of 5,000 years of sexual repression." But I've been to Chinese weddings and yes, it was so much pomp and circumstance. I'm Asian-American too, so talk about pressure of glamorizing your wedding night and making showy gestures to the several hundred people that show up! And older generations love to justify this behavior by claiming it's owed to them just because we're their offspring. Look, I'm all about supporting the ones who've raised you but this is insane. A wedding should be done the way you want it done, not as an excuse for your acquaintances to remember you by with a huge bash. Honestly, Ang Li is such a pioneer for directing this film especially in the early 90s when homosexuality was a much more divisive issue. Also, it lampoons Taiwanese society as well in a near-scathing, edgy way but you can't help but appreciate the very specific point of view he's taken.

I came away from this feeling that Ang Lee has a certain affection for the traditional Asian family, for all the misery this can cause. I also think that you have the wrong view of weddings. Weddings are much like funerals, the whole ceremony is not for your benefit, but for your family and friends. If you think otherwise, than don't even bother, or go to city hall. "Next!"
