Actually, lots of people have seen it. Even people who don't care for "foreign movies" have heard of it. It is very popular.

Oh, that's just thick. Rachel770 didn't meant that at all.

This movie was actually one of the top grossing films in China, the year it came out.

reply

Yep, rented this last year. Actually enjoyned it

reply

there was nothing sad or funny about this movie. it was just awful.

i guess not all ang lee films can be winners....just look at the hulk.

reply

awful? how so? do share why you feel so.

The film shared a culture divide that still exists today, that many zero attention span Americans have no concept of. But to those in the mix, well, they know of it all too well.

I'm not the person you originally replied to, but I was surprised after watching and coming to here and Amazon that I had heard correctly and that this movie was supposed to be a comedy.

Sure the concept screams "slapstick comedy" esp. here in America, but to me, it seemed more like a drama, and a somewhat bittersweet one at many points.

Not that there's anything wrong whatsoever with treating this topic dramatically. Just wondering what was supposed to be so funny about it.

Seen it and loved it. A really great film.

Saw it the other night, it was broadcast as a late-night movie on CBC Canada. I thought it was a thoughtful and thought-provoking story, but I also thought the acting was only so-so. I just couldn't get into any of them, none of them seemed believable. I didn't believe for a minute that Simon and Wai-Tung had any real love chemistry between them. I didn't believe for a minute that Wei-wei would be so "oui, oui" in her willingness to go along with this charade. I doubted the plausibility of the father in his final resignation and acceptance of the source of his new grandson(he was that quick to accept, huh??). In these and a lot of other areas the whole movie had a kind of contrived quality about it. That being said, I thought the story was based on a compelling concept, and really made me think about the whole concept of marriage, and family values, and trying to pass your name and your genes and heritage on to the next generation. yeah, it made me think about a lot of things. So in that regard it was a good movie.

I just saw it for the first time today and loved it. This is a great fun and meaningful film. I gave it a 9/10 for I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I saw this movie a few years ago, and every now and then think I might like to see it again, only I could never remember the name of it. I didn't realize until all this Brokeback hubub that it was an Ang Lee film. Guess that's why I liked it.
