magical realism...

I haven't even started but this movie already seems to be a weak adaptation, I heard that the book uses magical realism...is it still so in the movie?

reply

I saw the movie and although it is a far cry to what the book is (which to me is great) I thought it was good and the actors did a pretty good job.

magical realism is present in the film as well, but it is approached differently than in the novel. have you seen the film yet? if so, what are your thoughts?

I consider this film a great piece of cinematography and i do believe that it's 75% as well built as the book is.I've read one of Isabel Allende's other novels..."The country of my imagination"...or smth like this, and she said there(cause it was some kind of autobiographic book)that she liked the movie adaptation of her "house...",especially the part with Esteban's mother...an actress lady, who was brought to the movie making with a special airplane because of her huge weight.well, all in all....i think Merryl Streep done a great work,as well as Antonio Banderas and the others...Enjoied it,and i hope so did others :)

I think the movie has a weak magical realism, even if I like it. I think its weak because the original book had a better one, thats all.

For example, when both Esteban a Clara talk about magical things, they do it like they were talking about magic things in the real world, with a different accent and very opened eyes and even impression on their looks. In the book, magic is just something that happens, like the sun comming out each day.

There are wonderful moments, thought. Every time Clara lifts up something with her mind, people stare at her like she was doing something bad or is behaving like a little child. This is good; it is taking away the importance magic would have in our world.

I thinks american filmakers could learn a lot from latin-american magical realism. They haven't done it yet, but they will. They'll discover it, I know.

Sorry for my mistakes.

I liked the book, but it's just a poor display of magical realism, to me, allende has written way better things, and this book it's just a copy of "a hundred years of solitude", yeah, I know the storyline is kinda different, but come on!
