Pedro Segundo Tercero Whatever ..?!

Why is Pedro Segundo García (= Pedro García II., played by Joaquín Martínez) just called "Segundo" and Pedro Tercero García (= Pedro García III., played by Antonio Banderas) constantly mistaken as "Pedro Segundo" in the movie? – This is obviously wrong, absolutely senseless and very confusing!

reply

Segundo is not named Pedro, his name is Esteban, after his father. The reason Pedro is called Pedro Segundo is because Esteban knew his father as Pedro, not Pedro Segundo, thus he would be Pedro Segundo, not Pedro Tercero.

What? I think you're mixing up Pedro Segundo Garcia (Joaquín Martínez) and Esteban Garcia (Vincent Gallo)! Otherwise I didn't understand you; therefore it would be a good idea to refer to the actors who played the characters in the movie (which are different from the book anyway).

> The reason Pedro is called Pedro Segundo is because Esteban

You mean Esteban García, really the son of Esteban Trueba?

> knew his father as Pedro, not Pedro Segundo,

But the alleged father of Esteban García is just called "Segundo", not "Pedro" in the movie!

> thus he would be Pedro Segundo, not Pedro Tercero.

This again is Antonio Banderas, misleadingly called "Pedro Segundo" – misleadingly, because his father is, as I said, known as "Segundo", not as "Pedro" in the movie. Thus is should be obvious that he is "Pedro Terciero".

Or was Joaquín Martínez just (originally) wrongly credited as "Segundo"? Now this gets really confusing ...

i'm reading the book of this and i havent seen the movie but i think i can explain the relationship. Pedro Segundo is the foreman of Tres Maria's (esteban trueba's hacienda) and his sister was Pancha Segundo with whom Esteban T. had a son, this son got married and had a son also named Esteban Garcia (the important one). Pedro Tercero is the son of Pedro Segundo and cousin of the illegitimate child of Esteban T. I tried to figure it out to see if the relationship between Blanca and Pedro T. was incest. I think im right but im not completely sure.

The problem with this is, the story of the movie is different from the story in the book – it's radically shortened and modified. You should see the movie anyway!

If I follow what y'all are saying, SinginInTheRain and IMDBMurphy, then if Singin is correct it is a class issue (more specifcally, a personal Esteban Trueba class issue) that goes like this:

Pedro Segundo (Martínez), is called Pedro by Trueba, who doesn't know better (Trueba never knew the Martínez character's father, and didn't bother to connect enough with the peasant class to learn what the man was called).

Pedro Tercero (Banderas), is called Segundo by Trueba, for the reasons called out by Singin above.

***

Trueba of course faces another one of his Personal Class Issues later on when he finds himself to be the only one that doesn't know where Pedro Tercero is hiding out.

wow. if this is correct it is quite a revelation. is the evidence for this in the movie, or only in the book? please detail the scenes so we can work it out. and thanks for the info.

reply

well, i haven't seen the movie, but that has to be evidence for only it, in the novel, Trueba hires Pedro II as his foreman, and then Pedro (I)[just known as Pedro Garcia] is called in to get rid of ants in a specific scene. Pedro III is the one who falls in love with Blanca, although he was forbidden to stay on the Hacienda because of his communist attitude, of which Esteban (Trueba) disapproves. [In the novel] after Pedro (I) dies, no expense is spared in the funeral, including the Trueba family putting shoes and a hat on him so that he could walk around heaven with shoes, and have the chance to take off his hat when he met God. Pedro III manages to sneak into the funeral, disguised as a priest and is able to continue his relationship with Blanca. Trueba ends up finding out (ironically, by the bastard child that was concieved when he raped Pancha, who is named Esteban Garcia) and almost kills Pedro III. Pedro III barely escapes death, losing three fingers to Trueba and runs off. Pedro II, having lost his father, packs up and leaves, telling Trueba that he does not want to be there when [Trueba] finds his son.

I hope that clears things up a little, at least from the book.... if you haven't read it, i highly recommend it.

At the book, Esteban Garcia is Trueba's grandson!
