Why did Esteban/Jeremy Irons
rape that girl in the begining of the movie? That seemed reslly random and out of place.

Horny and without morals. If you notice he was initially manhandling his horse as if he were going to violate the creature before the girl came along. It's been quite awhile since I read the book, but I think he raped a few girls in it.

Years and years of been on he's own or just in contact of the poor villagers made him harder then the rock and basically without a soul. He raped different girls and had some illegitimate children.
