Why did Esteban/Jeremy Irons

rape that girl in the begining of the movie? That seemed reslly random and out of place.

Horny and without morals. If you notice he was initially manhandling his horse as if he were going to violate the creature before the girl came along. It's been quite awhile since I read the book, but I think he raped a few girls in it.

he was described as a lonely man who dedicated he's life to make he's land profitable. Years and years of been on he's own or just in contact of the poor villagers made him harder then the rock and basically without a soul. He raped different girls and had some illegitimate children. Once he realized what kind of brutal person he was becoming he decided to get married to a good family girl.

Esteban did it because he could. The awful realities of his being patron was that he could do what he wanted and no one would gainsay him. He had a need and he chose to address it with the poor girl. That was also why Pedro's father let his son be whipped and mistreated by Esteban. It was just the way that it was. Feudalism at its worst for the people and the best for the peerage.

"Daddy! He's killed Steve and he's jamming the door with him!"
