creepy?

Okay I love love love meryl streep and thought, and vanessa redgrave and glen close etc were amazing and i thought the movie was good and that most of the performanecs were unfaultable
BUT..
did anyone else find it quite a creepy film?

2010 is going to be Meryl's overdue year :)

I thought parts of the film were very hard to watch, but also that that was appropriate for this historically based subject matter.

I'm curious, what specifically did you find creepy?

The hardest scene for me to watch was when Esteban Garcia fondled and threatened to throttle the young Blanca. A close second was when Pedro gripped his fathers arms as he was whipped by Esteban Trueba. Can you imagine the father's pain? I loved Joaquín Martínez in this role; he got the father's silent suffering and his integrity spot on.

I'm not the original poster, and I can't speak for him or her, but as far as I'm concerned, the majority of the film was creepy.

First of all, the sweetest Meryl Streep's character was, there was something intrinsically creepy about her throughout – starting all the way back from when she was a child. Secondly, let's be honest, Glenn Close's character was always a little creepy.

And certain scenes were done – I suspect deliberately – in a way that left the viewer wondering if something sinister was about to happen. For example, when asked about goes to the house near the end, and cuts on the light, there you have Meryl Streep's character sitting there, very wore out looking, with the blank look on her face, and it's almost as though something horrible is about to happen. For a minute there, it seemed like she was a ghost. Creepy!

There was constantly this sense that there was something lurking unseen, and that any moment, a ghost would come out and harm somebody. The whole film felt haunted. So when you ask what someone found creepy about the film, I'm surprised that you even have to ask. Because as far as I'm concerned, there was hardly anything that wasn't creepy about this film.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

Of course it's creepy. But that would be OK if it weren't soooo rambling.
I've always had the impression that it's somehow pasted together from two different movies about the same family.
Hard to explain but that's the impression I get.

I'm not a fan of most of the folks in the movie (minor exceptions would be Antonio Banderas and Hannah Taylor Gordon) but I really dislike watching Vincent Gallo ever since I saw "Tetro." Is he capable of playing a likable character?

It was certainly creepy when Ferule made her ghostly appearance. She should have smacked Esteban upside the head on her way out.

I actually thought she was going to do that! I thought he was in BIG trouble, and I thought the zombie-seeming ghost of Glenn Close's character seemed like she was up to no good.

I sure did. The scene with Ferula drifting into the dining room, with only Clara realizing she is a ghost, still creeps me out.

No?!

The only thing remotely creepy about the film was the title and the Twilight Zone-like anachronisms that filled up the prop and set boxes for this movie.

If you want to call the fact that seemingly the entire world was regressing back to the 1700's-1800's while the food was marching headfirst into 1997 "creepy" then I guess I can go with that.

The book actually had a lot of mysticism and spirituality. Both through the character of Clara, and (while not mentioned) the peasants on the hacienda (which where actually the natives) Historically, Chile went through a lot of turmoil, especially during the coup - when Blanca is taken. There were thousands of rebels (mostly college students) that were taken and never seen again. So, the book that the movie was based on was, actually, quite creepy, on many levels. It is a fascinating (and long) read, and I am amazed that someone actually tried to squeeze it into a 2 hour movie.

Creepy? Eh...no more than other "male capitalists are all predators" kind of stories.

I found it more stupid and idiotic beyond belief.

Try writing that same story about the founder of Chrysler motors. If you don't get sued or physically assaulted by the family, then count yourselves lucky.

Try filming that same story about the guy who opens up a chain of brake and tire shops here in the US, or grocery stores, or electronic stores.

This movie is pure BS on every level, I can't say enough bad things about it.

Sure you did!
