A few questions...

Actually, I never saw the beginning and saw this movie only once; so I didn't really forget.
I just have a few questions if anyone can get back to me ASAP.

What happened in the beginning? I mean, how and why did they end up searching for their owners? Did they actually leave home or were they forgotten some place? And did they really search through the US? (Well, not in real life!, I mean is it mentioned or referred to in the movie that they're in a different state/place?)

And also, do the dogs and cat give up in the movie and decide to go back home? (That's what it says in one of the links at the top... Plot Summary or smth)

The family go on holiday and leave their pets with a friend. The friend goes away for a few days and the animals jump over the fence.

And did they really search through the US?

Only at the end. Shadow falls down some sort of ditch and decides to give up. It all ended happily though

Their owners went on a long trip for the Dad's work, and they left the animals on a farm with a friend. After about a week the animals decide that it's been too long so Shadow thinks that his boy Peter is in trouble. The other two reluctantly follow.

It's not specifically mentioned, but you see a map in one part of the movie that shows they traveled through the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California to reach their home in what I think is Oregon.

They don't really give up, they're trying to reach home in the first place. Shadow falls into a pit and feels that he's too old to carry on and gives up, but somehow the other two get him out (it's not shown how) and they finally make it back home.

Actually, Shadow got himself out of the pit--it's not shown how, but eventually he must have been able to gather the strength for it. Sassy and Chance are just as surprised and elated to see Shadow at the end as the humans are. ;)

I agree Shadow got himself out. The other two didn't help then let him take longer to get to the house for dramatic effect.
