Only Americans can make movies like this

I usually am not sentimental but I just love these kind of movies
which trigger your emotions.
Only Americans can do that.
Have to say this movie is really one of those movies with
a moral but not in an annoying way. (Do what you want to do in your
life until its too late)

reply

"Only americans can do that"

Only idiots like yourself can say things like this.Do you think for instance that europeans canĀ“t do films like this? Get a life!!!

reply

Precisely.....only americans can waste a perfectly good 2 hours with such sentimental drivel. It has nothing to do with evoking real emotions. Argh!!!

reply

Lighten up. it's a fun movie. if you want "Fitzcarraldo" go rent it. if you want something light and breezy, watch this

reply

You're an idiot. Other directors are just as good - if not better - at portraying emotions in movies. Das Boot? The Seven Samuari? I think those were good movies - even better.

reply

"Other directors are just as good - if not better -"

You started off on the right track, but adding "if not better" is almost as bad as what the first poster did. Is it so difficult to believe in equality that we have to resort to a prejudiced view to claim the equality? =\ Why don't we leave it at this...no matter what race/nationality/etc, a person's talents are of their own merit and they may or may not be gifted in a certain area due to that fact alone. Doesn't that sound better than unilaterally saying that every foreign director is "just as good - if not better -" than an American? (Just food for thought)

reply

you may not be sentimental , but you've been played like a fiddle.
only Amreicans make movies like this, it's simple story and predictable twists are like a sitcom. Telegraphed punches that push all the buttons do not a story make. It's like a ride in the fun house or a meal at McDonalds, every emotion pulled the way you wanted, but not really that filling.

Liked it, but, knew it all the same

reply

Most world cinema is informed by a certain cynicism. This film has none.

Where the hell you think some of the twists are like a sitcom is beyond the thoughts of a rational being, and you're right, pushing all the buttons doesn't make a story, but this film has a story. A straightforward and simple one, with beauty in its simplicity and directness.

Yeah I don't want to get into this argument but I'm kind of confused at that one comment. I don't see how a meal at McDonald's is like a ride at a funhouse. I'm just saying. Good movie by the way.

reply

Only Americans cane make movies like this???????
HAHAHA yeah.

THat's like saying only Americans can sing, only Americans can direct....
Just two tear-jerking movies off the top of my head...Moulin Rouge, Rabbit Proof Fence, both Aussie directors, LOTR 3, New Zealand, Braveheart, Aussie, see? Not all emotional, sentimental movies come out of the US.

I love this movie! It's so sad and happy at the same time. I agree all the actors are good, they really suit their parts, i don't agree that only americans can make movies like that but i do think that part of the success of this movie was due to how it was done and because the main character was american and stuff (?) but i suppoes it could have worked worked with an english character or Australian as well. Whatever, i just love this movie!

there are soooooo many things wrong with that statement.....
"Only Americans can make movies like this"
Please open your mind to the possibility that there are other countries in the world aside from the USA...
Come on give it a try......
Every aussie can name the american president but who can name our prime minister?
Ill stop before i offend anyone.....

"Ill stop before i offend anyone...."

Too late. You really can't help yourself can you? Some American's don't know who John Howard is because Australia is abolutely irrelevant. Get a life of your own.
The only way you people can define yourselves is through your feelings toward the USA. Pathetic.

I've seen news broadcasts from Australia. It was all about the US. Doesn't anything happen down there? Small wonder you're all obsessive/compulsive about your identities.

Imagine comparing a charming, harmless little movie like this to Seventh Samurai. What are you, 14 years old? The only thing they have in common is that they both had a camera on the set.

You are the reason Americans have such a bad reputation worldwide, lazygardner, you moron.

Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want.

reply

Umm, actually, Mel Gibson is an American, born in peekskill NY

Just sayin is all

I sort of feel where the original poster is coming from in a way. Lots of times American's are lambasted for making overly sappy heart-warming movies (ala Frank Capra) and I think this sort of movie is typical of some of the better light hearted American films.

I think the whole problem with the statement is "Only Americans can do that." obviously. Of course anybody can make a sentimental movie regardles of the country. I think a much better statement would be "This is the sort of movie that American's do so well."

Anywho I have to defend my country in some regard . To all the people jumping on the OP, i hope you aren't the same people who make equally incorrect statements like "only America would make a film so nauseating in its sweetness. Or only America would make a film so violent and stupid." It works both ways, and quite frankly I find a lot more of the latter quotes than the OP's.

reply

thats because very few people would be arrogant enough to make this kind of comment if they weren't an OP.

It's a lot easier to slag another country off outright, but I think it's worse to make a comment which says your better than everyone else because then you are belittling every other country, which is why a lot of american's get a bad reputation which is completely unfounded. I know because one of my best friend's was originally from America and when she moved to England a lot of people said they felt uncomfortable because of her patriotism, but even then she wasn't as arrogant as the oiginal poster here.

How do you guys know that the original poster is American? I am German and I think what he/she said is right.
As a German, I am a cynical bastard myself (like many Europeans), which is why I love the naivete and innocent goodness in those typical American feel-good movies. They usually have a simple and positive message, which I hardly ever find in European movies, where moral relativism is the norm and people find it inappropriate to make movies which are just positive.

BTW, it is very intersting to read the reactions from people that come from countries with an inferiority complex towards the Americans. It is so easy to tick you guys off. There's few things that I really like about my country, but the one thing that I really like is the German's confidence and lack of inferiority complex.

reply

The original poster didn't mean anything bad, I think; and the only one who got it was sven512, I think.

reply

What a stupid thing to say! Of course others than Americans can make movies like this. dont you watch Australian/European movies? I am Australian, i know we dont make the best movies, but i personally find it offensive when people like you say stupid comments like that. Get over yourself!

This will cork her cry-hole!

reply

Europeans not only can do movies like this but do them better. Amelie for example. I felt I was drowning in a bottomless vat of treacle, Hollywood feel good love and relationship cliches without end. And through it all I could hear the gears of manipulation turning loudly. Makes Ghost look like the Seventh Seal. Not only Americans can make movies like this, they are just the most likely to make them crappy.

NO idea how to quote another post with those cool lines to seperate it off so I'm just going to copy and paste and put in bold-italic:

I usually am not sentimental but I just love these kind of movies
which trigger your emotions.
Only Americans can do that.

This poster did not just say that Americans are better at doing this type of movie [which I must say they are good at the mushy stuff and I love them for it!] they said that Americans ONLY can do this which is why offence has been taken. They also didn't say just this type of mushy movie, they were very general and as you can see referenced movies that trigger your emotions - a very big area of film.

In terms of this type of over sentimental movie it is definetley an American market although I'm sure there are some good none American ones too. However in terms of movies that envoke emotions in general I can think of lots of films directed and written by non Americans that are up their on my fave movie list - my fave being American Beauty directed by Sam Mendes [sp?] who is British.

Being English I take offence at the way SOME, not all, Americans come across as arrogant - they do not have the best reputation for this sadly - and when I hear someone ridiculing/disparaging other countries in whatever way I feel like screaming that there is no such thing as an American unless you are of Native American descent. All other Americans come from all over the world - and quite a few from Europe/Ireland - and that their history is only a few centries old. You would think that the stereotype that they give off would be more tolerant to every one else. There again everybody is intolerant to some degree - we rely on sterotypes.

ANYhoo, I have finished my rant - I tried to make it as non-offending as possible and still put my point across and I hope I have succeeded - I just needed to rant and rave for a bit!! BTW Please excuse my grammar - I may be English but it doesn't mean my language skills are that good [although I do like using the occasional mahoosive word! - look it up on the internet! he he he :D]
