It's Only Rock and Roll...


I really liked this documentary - I've known about GG Allin since the 80's and yet he was definitely more myth than man.

As for talent - he didn't have any more or less than the average hardcore band in the 80's. What set him apart was his stage act - obviously he wasn't the first punk star to have an outrageous stage act, but he may have been the last. I think GG Allin definitely epitomized street punk much like the Germs did back in the late 70's - but it's stupid to call him a "genius" or that he did what most people didn't have the courage to do. Why overanalyze GG Allin? He was entertaining on the outside looking in, but I think he'd get on most people's nerves after awhile if you had to deal with him all the time.

And I don't believe him when he says without his band he'd be a serial killer - I think that was part of his act. Yes, I think it was an act and I think he constantly tried to live up to his own hype, which eventually killed him.

But I'm still glad he existed!
