Clarence Williams III

Clarence Williams III was nothing short of brilliant in this film as Wesley and Michael's junkie father...a performance on par with his performance in PURPLE RAIN...why the Academy keeps overlooking this guy is beyond me.

I agree whole-heartedly! I just rented this movie again for, like, the fifth time, just to enjoy Williams' wonderful work! Simply wonderful!

He's great in every role.

The part of him explaining how he got to be a junkie while shooting up is burned into my brain forever. Haunting words "This is your God!" When he realizes that he will not survive the shot he's just injected he says "Oh, my God!" but it's too late and he dies. It's such a great performance that every year at least I play that scene to remind myself what great acting really is.

reply

Funny -- I do the same thing, literally every year. I watch the film just for that scene, just for him. You must also be an actor, Waldosanmiguel -- a very good one, I'm sure, if you recogize and appreciate such fine acting.

I wish I was an actor, no i'm just a fan. That movie I saw with a bunch of friends. Everyone was expecting another New Jack City and were complaining about the film and talking sh!t. I was just mesmerized by the acting especially during that scene. I wanted to see that scene by myself, in my house alone, on video. Now i have the dvd and play it just to appreciate a truly undiscovered Oscar worthy performance.

He is a true acting genius...

America reveres DeNiro and other competent MAINSTREAM actors, but its the perennial supporting role actors (like CWIII) that seem to always go unnoticed. Kinda unfair, but thats the 'business' I guess.

His portrayal in this movie is one of THEE most underrated performances of all time, in my very humble opinion...

What a gem this movie is!

Clarence Williams III is one of THE most underrrated actors in the business. His death scene was so riveting and real!! It was one of the best performances by someone on drugs who overdosed. He is a great actor and it's too bad that his talents are virtually going unnoticed.

Sugar Hill was a great film in itself but CWIII certainly raised the bar!

Excellent performance. Very good actor

I just watched this movie , Yesterday for that performance...He's a true pro and brings a quiet diginity to each and every role I have seen him in. How many actors can you truly say that about? Now or even ever ? Daniel Day Lewis, Hector Elizondo, Robert Shaw, Walter Mattau, Robert Duval.... Just to name a few on a very short list

reply

Hi 5!!!!!!!
He is indeed brilliant and I have asked the same question myself. Sad that he is overlooked so much.

The scene with him and the two boys eating chicken together, with his hair combed up "nice", and even wearing a blazer in his own apartment...CWIII is an understanded yet cinematic powerhouse in this scene.

The Mod Squad was big mistake. Before that show he was a highly respected stage actor. Him and his wife Gloria Foster were a younger generation Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. After the Mod Squad it seemed to diminish his worth in Hollywood and Broadway.
But this is a great actor who should never be over looked. I want to add that Michael Wright is also a overlooked actor and Leon.

It's not beyond me. The Academy has another agenda that does not include who the real winners are.

Oh yeah, you can keep the affirmative token.
