Where was everybody?

The scene where Roper is killed they're on a busy street packed with people. As soon as gun shots go off of course people scatter but I still feel like people would be around or visible in the background. Literally within a split second everybody vanished.

It's worse in an ensuing scene where Pick kills the fat guy and then when Chance shows up and they have that shootout. It's broad daylight and not a single car or person around.

This movie takes place in a big city New Orleans. So where are the people?

Great observation, however if you look closely in the scene right after Roper gets killed when Van Cleef comes over to take the money belt from him, you can clearly see people crouching near vehicles for cover. Stupidly, some of them are crouching on the 'outside' of the vehicles they're near, exposing themselves to potential further gunfire if any more had erupted.
