"Mame" with Cher?

Whatever happened to the proposed film starring Cher as Mame?

Jerry Herman put a 'temporary stop' to it about 15 years ago, because he wanted a revival on Broadway first. He had plans for three of his shows to be revived - 'La Cage', 'Mame' and 'Hello Dolly' in three consecutive seasons, so he didn't want any other productions of any of them.

'La Cage' finally got off the ground in late 2004, to mixed reviews, trouble behind the scenes, and a disappointing box office. While this was going on, he was putting 'Mame' together, and had asked a number of actresses to take the lead - I had heard Michelle Lee was his first choice, followed by Christine Baranski, and Glenn Close. Lee passed, Baranski said 'yes', had tryouts at the Kennedy Center in summer of 2006, with plans to take it to Broadway in 2006-07, but never made it due to production problems and mixed reviews.

After those two less-than-stellar revivals, Herman cooled on the Hello Dolly idea, and everyone involved with the TV movie some five years prior (Streisand, Cher) moved on to other projects.

'Hello Dolly' has finally got the green light for April, 2017 starring Midler.
