Alita has never really been properly put on film in the first place... the Anime was a huge disapointment compared to the Manga. Lets hope Cameron gets the spirit of the thing right.

reply

I disagree completely. I loved the anime, I prefer it to the manga actually. Just wish they continued it instead of making only 2 eps.

reply

What is it that makes you think his SciFi movie will be an adaptation of this manga ?

reply

dreams, prayers and a love of Alita

First of all, Cameron will blow it - there's no doubt about it. In fact, I'm sure it would be possible to make a great movie based on the manga, but not if that movie is an US production. The Japanese could do it, Europe could do it (France/ Germany/ UK), but not the US. Cameron quote: "I have an audience, so I can't do what I'd like to." - if analysts write the script, this project is doomed! I hope I'm wrong, but that's what I'd expect...

Now, for the CGI thing: it _is_ possible to do CGI, even create humans, you wont recognize as such. It was done a few times, even back then in Fight Club (yes, there are scenes where the actors where actually CGI). This was accomplished using Mental Ray, the most sophisticated and advanced raytracer available, far beyond anything used for Dreamworks or Pixar movies. But that raytracer needs _much_ more processing power compared to what's usually used, that's why it's mostly used for stills, single effects or short commercials and stuff, or they don't use it's full potential (Phenomenon for example, MR's advanced light-physics and ambient simulation, that even takes air humidity in account while rendering; or low-quality models, simple shaders, basic physics...). But it should be possible to use it, to the full extent, for Battle Angel, considering that not everything will be CGI, and as processing power gets cheaper every day - and it will be quite cheap late 2006/ early 2007, compared to the current prices (it would be 1/8 - 1/16 of todays costs, according to Moore)...

First, you're incorrect about the quote. It was something to the effect of "I can't just please myself". Secondly, it's going to be good. I was looking into some of the "specs" and all that. Just trust me. I don't think it could go wrong, unless it's written poorly as you so rightly pointed out

I wouldn't say that Mental Ray is anywhere near Final Render, but hey, each to his own.

Let's be fair here - we all know the Cameron remake will be poo.

However, this will mean the original will probably be released on DVD just before the new film comes out, and that's brilliant news.

I'm with everyone else on this. I'm very disappointed to hear that he is doing this. My take is that this movie will be mostly about Alita and Hugo's relationship, while being a virtually cut to cut remake of the anime.that at least seems to be his style.

it seemed in the first series, in the last book, the ending felt kind of rushed.

hint: you didn't see how alita got Lou out of the trash dump or be able to assume she was maybe lowered by a rope. that maybe it was done on purpose and not some BS that the artist was running out of time you might try to feed me.

Alita is my favorite "modern" Anime and would like to see it made into film ,as the anime left you wanting more, so as we say in Australia, "Fair go" Give Cameron a go, If he mucks it up thought, then "Its Clobberin time"

reply

the second series didn't finish yet so there probably wont be any being on tiphares scenes.

the MANGA i mean, first and second series. first series is where alita merged with the tower to keep it from falling, when mezerdech the robot who built tiphares killed herself, so Alita was reborn as a human in the end through changing tiphares into a giant tree (after she merged), a sort of pinnochio theme to the finish. the second series is where she never merged and is trying to ressurect Lou by getting to her brain back.

oh yeah i just mentioned a spoiler if you haven't noticed. you wouldn't know what im talking about anyway if you never read the MANGA.

read all what i wrote and you will still enjoy the movie.

... and manga.

so dont worry.

I hear you people saying that it will suck because the U.S. is doing it. You underestimate Americas ability to make a great movie. I have full faith in James Cameron.

reply

I'm not a fan of Cameron and his Science Fiction.
Along with Spielberg I find him to be the most overrated film directors of modern times.

T1: Stole it's Idiea from the Outer Limit's episodes "Soldier" and "Demon With A Glass Hand"
T2: Great when you were 13. Has not aged that well.
The Abyss: Begins well but evolves into a pretendious environmental preaching
Aliens: Took a horror masterpice and made a medicore action movie out of it.

I know the majority won't agree with me on this, but I wish he would just leve Alita alone.

reply

All of these four films are rated well above 7 here. I don't doubt that Cameron will take this project very seriously... We'll just have to see what we'll see, won't we?

reply

I'm not going to rack on Cameron's talent as a director, I liked his movie, but I object to this remake. Mainly on the high probability that it will fail to convey the deep emotional insights the Manga novel conveys; the Manga version of Battle Angel Alita stretches over 16 novels and still counting (first and second series combined), how Cameron can convey the same insights in just one movie is hardly plausible, a trilogy perhaps, but that can still only cover about half of the entire first series. The story of Battle Angel Alita is not just a story, its an epic tale that isn't even finished yet.

On the otherhand, it isn't entirely impossible for a long manga cut into 1 short film to work. It has only worked ONCE in the past with Akira, but then again that was done by the original team. It still hardly covers the depth of the Akira story, but it still stood out as an anime benchmark. Now we can only hope to see if Cameron can do the same. Through foreign filters and foreign writers, this film will either be another disappointment (like the previous version of Battle Angel Alita anime), or by some chance of miracle a great hyper-future science fiction film.

I don't understand why are you bitching about this. If you think it will blow, you don't have to see it. Stay with manga and don't spoil your feelings about Alita. If you don't think Cameron is the right director, finance your own movie, but your bitching on this board won't make a change. If you want something done, then organize, or contact Cameron directly with your suggestions -- sure you stand pretty much no chance of being heard, but this isn't it either. What is the purpose of these comments?

"If you don't think Cameron is the right director, finance your own movie, but your bitching on this board won't make a change"

that's a pretty lame copout. some valid concerns were raised on this board -- we don't want another special effects extravaganza -- Gunnm was much, much more than that. evocative of emotions and imagery that cameron could never hope to duplicate. if cameron gets his hands on this i'm expecting the kind of butchery that was star wars ep 1. i for one thought avatar was a failboat of imagery without substance.

make as much money as you want in the US box office -- that doesn't mean it's a good movie.

reply

you're comparing Avatar with SW ep. 1??? Wow you are wayyyyyy off. So what happens now when Avatar 2 ( dec. 2014) has a great story and lots of pretty pictures???
