Why did Greenhill...? (spoilers)

...go out of his way to make it obvious to Haines that he was a nutcase?

Why not just get Haines to represent him and act like a normal person instead of stalking her and creeping her out and letting her know he was not only guilty of killing his wife but of other murders as well?

He probably would have been acquitted.

I know that there has to be more than just that to the story but if that is the best the writers could come up with; a premise that is this ridiculous then its inevitable viewers will criticise it.

The whole thing about trying to make it look like he and Haines had planned the whole thing together would have been completely unnecessary if had just let her defend him in court.
