Was he expecting the same day at the end?

The last time Phil relives Groundhog Day and seemingly creates the perfect day, does he expect that to be what finally liberates him from his reincarnations to move on to the next day or does he expect he will relive the same day as usual?

It's never explicitly stated in the movie what's causing him to relive the same day over and over. So, it's possible that Phil just flat out doesn't know what's causing it. It's quite possible that, on waking up on February 3rd Phil would've assumed that it was still Groundhog Day.

I assume that's why they were playing the same song on his radio alarm, so he wouldn't realise immediately.

I agree with hurricane. ^

Phil did not know the cycle would end, nor was his intention of helping those people a plot to bring his freedom. The reason he had that perfect day is because he actually did change and finally became a better person - enough in fact that Rita could actually fall in love with him, something she would never have done earlier and which is what seemed to be the key that unlocked the cycle for Phil.

In my opinion, Phil certainly expected to relive the day again, and was finally at peace with it. When he awakes on the new day and hears Sonny and Cher (although a different part of the song), he looked content or at least resigned if nothing else.
