What's with the ending? (Spoiler)

So is the ending all in his mind, some alternate scenario of how things could have been if he hadn't shot himself? Or is his fate to just not die no matter how many times he tries to kill himself and ultimately he really does get his life together? Or has the whole movie been a bit of a hallucination - meaning what's up with the girl finding the bottle of pills hidden in the couch?

I know: the writer-director thought "Hey, enough of Schrader's stuff, remaking Taxi Driver with a bit of Hardcore thrown in is too obvious, let's use the ending of Friedkin's Cruising instead!". And that's what happened, check it out... (Fun fact: Cruising is also inspired by Taxi Driver, but only a few shots and scenes, it's far from a remake.)
Otherwise: God's Lonely Man is not a bad movie in my opinion, but not too good either. The main problem is the script: all the scenes, characters etc. are from Taxi Driver one way or the other, minus taxi and politics, while officially it's not a remake... Shame, it could have been great with more original ideas and/or more talented director, writer etc.
