It Really Should Have Been Better

It Really Should Have Been Better Than It Was. The information and fact delivery was there but for a 4 1/2 hr movie it really needed to be more cinematic. There were really no particular standout performances and what is probably most disappointing of all (at least to me) it didn't seem that cinematography was a specific focus in this film and I think that was a huge mistake.

It was designed to be a tv miniseries, hence the cinematography as it was. The decision to take it to theaters was made after the filming started, too late to change the approach.

No standout performances? I thought Jeff Daniels and Richard Jordan both delivered fantastic performances, and so have a lot of other people, but that's a matter of taste. Sorry you didn't see the same craft I saw from them. Both excellent actors who really delivered, IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it. Now that you tell me it was designed to be a TV miniseries it makes much more sense to me. I just think as a film it could have and should have been one of those Oscar sweepers in the scope it was using.

As far as Civil War miniseries go, have you seen North and South? I've been interested in checking it out if it's good.

reply

I've watched Gettysburg literally dozens of time, and I agree it could have been better, but that doesn't mean it's not good. JMHO.

I saw North and South some years ago; I didn't care too much for it. IMO it's more of a mini-series, so if you're interested in a Hollywood version of the people who lived, fought and died in that period, you might enjoy it.

I like The Blue & The Grey better, but it has its problems as well.

I saw North and South some time ago, but I don't remember a thing about it. I guess that means I didn't like it all that much.

I loved North and South but nothing compares to Gettysburg. One of my favorite movies of all time.

Pretend we're starting out in life, instead of ending up.

reply

No standout performances? Lol and whilst some of the framing was television like there was some finely crafted and shot scenes as well. Considering the schedule and budget, maxwell did fine

Jeff Daniels
Tom Berenger
Stephen Lang
Martin Sheen
Richard Jordan
C. Thomas Howell

All of these actors and those unmentioned gave fantastic "stand out" performances in Gettysburg.

For a supposed "meant to be TV series" with "disappointing" cinematography Gettysburg is a great film.

reply

sorry, can't trust anyone that gives The Searches 1 star lol

My dad loves the Searchers, but I just never cared all that much for it. I recognize the fact that it is a good movie, and one of Wayne's best performances, but for some reason I just can't get into it.

reply

It's not a movie thats for everyone, many Westerns aren't. It took me 3 viewings over about 10 years but by the third time I had matured as a student of cinema to the point where I fully understood all that was happening in the film (including the subtext) and it gave me the full realization that it is a bona fide masterpiece and the greatest American Western ever made (and the best overall IMO).

reply

Very true, though I love westerns in general. My all time favorites are the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; True Grit; Unforgiven; and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

reply

I don't either. In fact, I prefer the loose remake The Missing over it.

reply

One thing that could've made it better was the make up. Those beards had to be the worst I've ever seen glued to an actors face in any movie.
