Ulzana's Raid and other homages.

"Geronimo's" director, Walter Hill, often incorporated scenes and shots from other films into his own movies as homages. "Geronimo" was no exception.

Yes, there several scenes that pay tribute to the western film work of John Ford, but Hill also recreated scenes from lesser known westerns:

Sam Woods' "Ambush" (1950) was clearly an inspiration for a number of scenes such as the part when the Apaches ambush the cavalry from holes dug in the ground.

And Hill practically recreates an entire scene from Robert Aldrich's "Ulzana's Raid" (1972) almost shot for shot: the scene where Robert Duvall's "Sieber" chases down and kills two Apaches leading a string of horses. That is a carbon a copy of a sequence from "Ulzana's Raid" in which Burt Lancaster's character performs a similar feat. (Ironically, "Ulzana's Raid" also took scenes from "Ambush"- the part where an Apache look-out is hunted down on a mountainside by a cavalry scout was taken from the 1950 film.)

Ulzana, went on the warpath and killed I believe 67, and never lost a man. This from my faulty memory. I only wish that Hollywood would tell the true story about Geromino, Ulzana, Cochise, Mangas Colorado, etc. This because the true story is even better than the Hollywood versions. Tell the truth Hollywood and educate as you rake in the profits for dying do. Well I guess telling a true story is well beyond Hollywood, I stand corrected.
