Anyone recommend any good historical films?

Hi,

I just ordered this DVD after coming across it by accident, it was never released here so I never heard of it before.
I'm really interested in fact based films or documentries about american history and I'd be interested in any recommendations. I allready have the following:

Ken Burns: The West (Other KEN Burns items on my wish list)
One mans hero

reply

You 've ordered a nice film, but unfortunatelly it 's not historical true. It has little to do with the last Geronimo campaign.
A nice film is "Son of the morning star" a tv-movie about Custer. Don't know if it' s available on DVD format.

reply

Thanks for the tip, it appears to be available on VHS in Canada but that's it, strange.

I forgot to mention I've also seen Gettysburg and Glory, I'll keep an eye out for that one you mentioned.

Of course there's "Into the West", the 6-episode mini-series (hour and a half each) that aired for 6 weekends straight. Was considered to be a truly historical event. The DVD is available that I highly...stress, HIGHLY recommend.

If you like documentaries, Ken Burns: "The Civil War" series is one of the best ever made. I highly recommend it.

reply

I agree, Into the west shows 1800-1900 and it bears the gritty truth. Custer, mountain men, indian schools, civil war, the gold rush, and the reservations. a very good show...best buy for $39.99 the alamo is a good movie as well

"The true hunter only hunts when hungry."

check out "last of the Mohicans" (1992) dir. Michael Mann. "The New World" dir. Terrence Malick w/ Wes Studi. "The Mission" w/ Robert Deniro and "Cabeza De Vaca" from roger corman films. All films w/ historical aspects to them and very interesting.

Recommending historical films can be hard since there are a lot of good ones out there. Some that I can recommend are great for historical accuracy. "Gettysburg", "Gods and Generals", "The Alamo" (the one did in 2004), "Band of Brothers" and "We Were Soldiers". There are many others but these are some of the better ones. Ones like "Son of the Morning Star" are good because of the fact that Hollywood finaly started useing correct weapons to the period, and even started to use some of the correct uniforms. But don't really represent both sides of the conflict of the Plains Indian wars really good. "Into the West" was all right as far as the clothing went but some of the stuff they passed off as history never really happend. If you want the explanation on that you can e-mail me at [email protected]

I was really disappointed by Gods and Generals. They'd waited far too long making it and it was nowhere near as good as Gettysburg. Robert Duvall was good as Robert E. Lee though, very impressive.

reply

Gettysburg the the full length version and soundtrack ARE MASTERPIECES.
God ANd Generals Duvall did a good turn as LEE as Sheen did in Gettysburg.

But God and Generals was a pathetic revisionist piece of crapola glorifying the Southern WHite Man as a wonderful god fearing non racist and that the Yankess were nothing but money & land Grubbing scumbags. Thatthe war was fought over states rights and nothing else. It was more of a gloryfying of a great general but SKUNK of a man: Stonewall.ACCORDING to the film Stonewall personally interviewed for his cook (a black man) and prayed with him as an equal. Then there was the black female slavewho could read and Protected her white massa lady from the theivin Northern troops (yes there was looting) but the whole putrid glorification of the Southern white man was offensive to me. And I'm white! The 2 sides were better handled in Gettysburg where longstreet admits that SLAVERY was the bottom line cause of the war (england would NEVER come to the South's aid)

reply

Slavery was NEVER the bottom line of the Civil War. It was an add on and that's a fact.

Little Big Man with Dustan Hoffman is really good. It's base on history and has a lot of historical figures in it but events are characters are fudged a little.

reply

There are so many good historical films, not too many of them overly accurate, of course. But I'd recommend Dances With Wolves, Glory, Into The West which was already mentioned. Those are a good few to start with, anyway.

reply

Little Big Man is a terrific film, and the first, long before Dances With Wolves, to show things from the Indian side and have Indians playing Indians, even though the main character is a white man adopted by the Cheyenne. Can't recommend this film highly enough. A slightly hysterical Custer, but the Battle of Little Big Horn is portrayed pretty accurately, as well.

Moviebro, the OP said films about American history. A couple of your listed films don't count.

Gladiator, Rome, and 13th Warrior do not count. We're looking for American history.

For the people posting the new world, stop.
that movie is terrible.

reply

I'm sorry but the 13th Warrior is far from being a historical film. Michael Crichton took Beowulf and tried to make it 'more interesting'.

An amazing rental or purchase would be "The Cold War", which is a really long -- but damn fascinating -- bunch of TV episodes about American history from the end of WWII to 1991. Nobody has seen it, it seems. If you like the 1800's, watch "Deadwood" -- it's not overly concerned with history, but there is a level of accuracy you will not find anywhere else. Example: the streets are wet and muddy -- not with rainwater, but with urine and excrement. (People threw it out of their windows every morning. Also, try reading Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" -- you will also find things in there that no one else wants to talk about.

Blazing Saddles should do the trick.

Little Big Man is a comedy farce, Look for Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, or a great documentary is We Shall Remain a 3 disc set that tells the truth.
