You've got to be kidding me right? Ralph fienes, Leonardo Dicaprio were 10x times better than him that same year, WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED!

maaaaan I dunno, I liked Girard a lot, he was charismatic, smart and lots of fun, but I mean, come on. Ralph Fiennes and Pete Postlewhite.

Someone's always got to lose. Fiennes was his toughest competition IMO and probably a bit stiff to miss out. But Jones made Gerard such a compelling and interesting support character, that a sequel was built around him. That doesn't often happen.🐭

I agree with the TC. Of course this happened a lot back then. Sean Connery won an Oscar for the Untouchables over Denzel Washington in Cry Freedom and Morgan Freeman in Street Smart. Then Tommy Lee Jones lost for JFK to Jack Palance in City Slickers. To make it up to him they gave him an Oscar for this. They should've waited for a later performance.

I'm just not seeing it, he shows little emotion, has very little dialogue. How terrible were the nominees that year? He didn't bring anything at all to this movie.

Batman Forever though? Ship that man the lifetime achievement award.

He was awesome in The Fugitive.
So many details, underacted, authentic.
His best movie performance imo.
Oscar well deserved.
He (and Harrison) made the movie.
But it also always depends on what the other nominees are/did.

I love Tommy but Leo deserved it followed by Pete For In the name of the father.

Pete and Leo were the best that year

It was a great performance. He brought a lot of humour and charisma that could easily have been a very bland, typical cop role. He and Ford transformed this from just another action movie.
