At the end of the film Diego is about to get deported. But how can he if he was a Cuban resident? Don't people get deported to their country of origin and not from the place of their birth?

he wasn't getting deported, he was being exiled. two different things.

He was being exiled because 1. he's gay in a macho culture and 2. his political beliefs. In Cuba, if you're against the revolution, you're against Fidel... therefore, you must be exiled or sent to prison.
