I've never understood the praise. I think it's one of the weaker Grisham films, with The Rainmaker, A Time to Kill, The Client and probably even The Pelican Brief ahead of it.

I think the plot is rather convoluted and difficult to follow at times, and of all the things that will turn me off of a movie, that one is near the top. That's the first strike against it.

The other problem is that it's too fucking long. 2 1/2 hours for a movie like this is just too much.

Even if you fixed those issues though, I don't think that rockets this film to #1 on the list, and I'm sure I'd still put The Rainmaker and A Time to Kill ahead of it.

I started it and got maybe five pages in and bailed. I'm not sure if I just wasn't in the mood or what, but I wasn't feeling it, at least not enough to keep going with an almost-600 page novel when I'm a slow reader.

Hey, that was me who was talking to you! Wish I could remember what I said.

reply

If you figure it out, let me know! Any idea why your posts were deleted?

reply

I think I was just asking questions about the book/ saying that I liked the film but did think it was one of the weaker renditions. I rewatched the movie recently and actually liked it better this time around (can't believe that was 3 years ago!)

reply

Why did you delete back then? I’ve been reading some of your newer posts. You have some good takes on movies

reply

Thanks!

I was quite young (still am) and felt I needed a fresh start. I needed a long break from the site and didn't want any old posts lingering (I deleted them.) Still, it's hard to resist the urge after watching a movie, wanting to know what people have to say/think about it. Anyways, my old posts are such a mess, haha.

reply

I think it was too long to and I think they could of cut a lot of it without much loss.

reply

I just couldn’t buy the portly Wilford Brimley as the threatening bad guy. Watching him waddling along with the gray walrus mustache was more comical than menacing. I admire the unconventional choice but, it was a little absurd

Best Grisham movie by far.
Great thriller all over.
Great cast and pacing.

reply

I agree it was fantastic but I prefer A Time To Kill and The Client before this one.

reply

The Client was terrible. I can't put my finger on it but it just didn't work. I'm placing the blame on Sarandon. Never a fav of mine.
A Time To Kill was VERY exciting and well made but I disagree with its approval of vigilantism.
The amazing thing about The Firm was that it was made at all considering how the book is full of document reading and shuffling. If you notice, many of the sub characters have very little lines.
I would have to say MY favorite Grisham adaption, so far, has The Pelican Brief.

reply

Except for the Hollywood ending. The book ending was much better.

reply

I didn't mind the ending, it's not strictly Hollywood since he barely can get some life back, and their marriage is strained.

What happens in the book?

reply

Spoilers below.

The film accords with the book in most respects, but the ending is significantly different. Mitch does not end up in the Caribbean, as in the book; he and Abby simply get into their car and drive back to Boston.

Thanks for the link.

But from this, it sounds to me the book has an even more Hollywood ending: he gets rich stealing from the firm and goes to the Caribbean.

reply

And on the run for the rest of his life.

reply

Yeah it’s great. I wish they still made movies like this, well plotted, great cast, thrilling yet full of surprises, and perhaps most of all… it assumes the audience has a brain.

Do they even make this genre of film anymore??

reply

Nope! They don't.

I didn't even realize the movie was so long. It's probably a little longer than it needs to be, but it still maintains a good pace.

reply

Yeah the pacing is great, I never ‘felt the length’ so they got it right as far as I’m concerned, and with movies clocking in at 3 hours these days it breezed along just fine.

reply

Some scenes dragged on a little, but other than that it worked.
