Why

Why isn't this movie more well-known? I thought it was of the best movies of its kind I have ever seen.

I thought is was an excellent movie. Sometimes some of the lesser known films can really surprise you! Unlike smiller2051's review, I don't have the books to which to compare it, but it is certainly a LOT better than the 1 that he rated it!

When comparing movies to books, the narrative is usually lost in the movie. The author has much more leeway to write words than is ever possible in movies. When you rate a movie, one must judge if a story was told and how well. What about the acting? What about the cinematography?

This film is so far above a 1!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you, kitty.

I saw this movie so long ago, and just recently re-rented it. I'd forgotten how much I liked it. It's one of several movies that really influnced my love for all things Africa.

The acting is good, and cool to see such well known actors now in some of their early roles. The setting and cinematography is incredible! And the music is perfect for this story. And you almost forget it's a Disney movie too.

And now 16 years after I saw this on VHS, I'm headed to Africa next week for the first time!

Other great movies about Africa:

Born Free

Hatari! (John Wayne)

The Power of One*

Angles in the Dust (about the orpahnage our team is goint to help out)

Blood Diamond

Hotel Rwanda

Zulu

The Ghost and the Darkness

* - probably the movie that influenced me the most.

I do remember seeing tv spots for this film when I was 11 years old in 5th grade. I don't know, it seemed like one of those movies where it looks like a cheesey girl disney type movie and u see it and are surprised at how much you find your self enjoying it.
